Decubitus Ulcer | Symptoms, Causes, Treatments

The decubitus ulcer is often referred ot as a bed sore. The term “decubitus” stems from the Latin word “decubere”, which means lying down. They can develop rapidly and progress to stage four if not immediately cared for.  Decubitus ulcers are open wounds on the body that are difficult to treat and can lead to death. In fact, decubitus ulcers are ranked as the number two cause of death resulting from medical treatment.

Decubitus ulcers are caused by constant pressure over time. Friction from movement and shearing and the movement of skin in the opposite direction of bone are contributing causes. Decubitus ulcers are usually found on individuals that are paralyzed, confined to a bed, or sit in a wheel chair.

The first stage of a decubitus ulcer is a spot of redness that does not go away, even after pressure is relieved. This is the first symptom, and should be taken seriously despite the lack of severity. Besides redness, the spot may feel warm, itchy, or sore.

The second stage of a decubitus ulcer is marked by the beginning of skin loss, starting with the epidermis, but can be as deep as the dermis. A stage two decubitus ulcer can look like a blister or scrape surrounded by purple or red discoloration.

At stage three, a decubitus ulcer is an open wound. Due to the damage caused to all the skin layers, the decubitus ulcer looks like a deep crater in the skin. There can even be extensive damage that cannot be seen underneath.

A stage four decubitus ulcer is the worst and most difficult to treat. There is much tissue loss and damage to muscle, bone, tendons, and ligaments. The crater is very deep, and bone can often be seen protruding through the flesh.

Decubitus ulcers are difficult to treat, especially as they progress through the four stages. The most important treatment is relieving pressure from the area. Treatment can range from simple cleaning to debridement for stages one and two, or surgical procedures for stages three and four. Decubitus ulcers are easily preventable, but unfortunately occur.

Cipralex Depression Medication

Many people who take Cipralex have a deep dark depression issue happening. While most people experience some form of depression, long term depression that goes untreated could be harmful. Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

Phase 1, the chronic phase has very little or no symptoms that are noticed, this phase can last for months or even years before it is detected, people would be diagnosed at this stage, usually by accident after having blood test performed for other things such as regular checkups.

Phase 2, the accelerated phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia is a far more dangerous one, during this phase, the patient could suffer a swollen spleen, and bone pain and fever as the leukemia cells grow more rapidly in the body.

Phase 3, the blast crisis phase has several problems that can occur if chronic myelogenous leukemia goes untreated such as weakness, pin point red marks appearing suddenly, fatigue, sudden bleeding, bruising, and many others diverse symptoms.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia – Causes

Chronic myelogenous leukemia is usually associated with a chromosome abnormality known as the philadelphia chromosome. Calcaneal Spurs | Dealing With Them

The calcaneus is what most people know as the heel bone and calcaneal spurs are bony protrusions on the calcaneous. Burkholderia Is Microscopic

Burkholderia is also known as B cepacia, B pseudomallia, as well as other different strains that have been verified and documented. It is a bacteria usually found in water environments. Bunion Surgery | When Is It Time?

Bunion surgery is needed when a bunion is misshaped and out of place, causing inflammation and pain. You may be asked to wear a compression stocking; this will help with blood circulation in the legs. Always do what the doctor tells you to do for your individual case.

During bunion surgery, which usually only takes around an hour, the bunion surgeon will make, a keyhole cut over the joint of your toe. The exact type of procedure differs depending on the size of the bunion. The surgeon will remove some of the bone and reposition it to fit as it should. Tendons and ligaments will also be repositioned then screws or wires will be used to keep the bone in place. They will either dissolve or be removed in another visit.

After the bunion surgery operation, you will need to wait until the general anesthetic has worn off and the surgeon has checked to make sure you are ok before you can go home. You will need to keep your foot well rested and well supported to allow for a perfect recovery from bunion surgery.

Atrial Flutter Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Atrial Flutter is associated with atrial fibrillation, some patients have both and they are both associated with a risk of thrombus formation and thromboembolism.

Atrial Flutter has two different types;

Type one- is anatomically and electrically, that is always disturbed by atrial pacing with beats from 240 – 350 per minute.

Type two- is associated with atrial rates above 350 beats per minute.

Atrial Flutter is common during the first week of heart surgery and its prevalence increases with age. It is common in men and much less common than atrial fibrillation.

Atrial Flutter Symptoms – people who suffer with Atrial Flutter often complain of tiredness or a shortness of breath, the arrhythmia is usually persistent, even though the patient will experience palpitations, they are not always prominent.

Atrial Flutter Causes – Atrial Flutter is common in patients who suffer from heart failure or high blood pressure. Atrial Flutter arises from the right side of the heart in the upper chamber; electricity circulates around this at a very fast rate which drives the main pumping chamber called the ventricles.

Atrial Flutter Treatments- there are several treatments involved with treating Atrial Flutter;

•             Avoiding caffeine and alcohol can be is a good start.

•             Agents used to thin the blood to protect against blood clots and strokes

•             Beta blockers or digoxin to help slow the heart rate

•             An electric shock across the heart (cardio version) to help restore a natural rhythm, which is done under a general anesthetic, although this is an effective method it is only temporary. Atrial Flutter does tend to return.

•             There is one option that has a 90% success rate; this procedure is called radiofrequency ablation, which is effective in the elimination of arrhythmia. However, the side effects of this particular procedure could mean the patient would need a pacemaker. Many patients who have Atrial Flutter also suffer with atrial fibrillation, which comes from the left side of the heart and is more complex than Atrial Flutter.

  An ECG, a chest X-ray and an echocardiogram (ultrasound scan) would be carried out when Atrial Flutter is suspected in a patient.

Altitude Sickness Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Altitude sickness is also known as acute mountain sickness and is an effect of being in a high altitude. It commonly occurs above eight thousand feet or higher. Many skiers or hikers at high altitudes will experience the symptoms of altitude sickness. These symptoms can range from mild to life threatening. These symptoms affect the nervous system, the lungs, the muscles and the heart. In most cases these symptoms are mild, however the higher up in elevation one goes the less oxygen one gets and the more problematic the issue becomes. Primary symptoms are headaches along with a lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and shortness of breath. These symptoms closely mimic those of someone experiencing a heat stroke. Altitude sickness can cause pulmonary edema which means that fluid collects in the lungs. This further reduces oxygen into the blood stream and very rapidly reaches vital organs and tissues. Brain swelling can occur causing confusion and if untreated death.

Altitude sickness can occur more rapidly if someone is climbing quickly into higher altitudes. The severe symptoms depend on this factor in fact as well as how much someone is exerting themselves. For people who live at lower levels or levels closer to sea level, climbing into higher altitudes can cause altitude sickness a lot faster than someone who lives closer to mountain elevations. Acetylcysteine is a drug that is primarily used for people with respiratory problems. It is used as a supplement as well and it helps break up the stickiness of mucus. It can be administered as an inhalant or taken orally. Acetylcysteine is used by people afflicted with emphysema, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, bronchitis and other lung diseases. The effect of using this drug is to clear the lungs and help in breathing. Acetylcysteine is most commonly taken as an inhalant, but there are other ways to take this medication. People can take it by mouth and can be a soluble solution mixed with another liquid such as cola. Drinking the medication can cause nausea and if vomiting occurs it is important to report the occurrence to a doctor.

Acetylcysteine can have some fairly nasty side effects associated with its use. Mouth sores, runny nose are the most common of the side effects. The worse effects that can occur are severe stomach or abdominal pain, stools that are black and vomit that looks like coffee grounds. Acetubular Fractures Treatment

Acetubular fractures are not as common as other known fractures; this particular one has to do with the top of the femur (thighbone) and the acetubulum (hipbone) otherwise referred to as the ball and socket.
