Salaries for Respiratory Therapists

The average starting respiratory therapist salary for a newly graduated CRTT is $47K annually. RRT’s make more as a starting wage, $62K. The highest respiratory therapist salary that can reasonably be expected is $74K. The highest salary will go to a highly qualified therapist with 10-12 years of experience, and proficient in ABGS, intubation, ventilator management, therapist driven protocols, and sometimes specialized in a specific area. Department supervisors are usually RRTs who have obtained a master degree in business administration, and are not required to have a license since they do not practice any longer.

The starting qualifications for a Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) are pretty basic. A certificate of completion for a CRTT program is all you need to be able take the national exams. The AARC ( American Association for Respiratory Care) administers these exams across the nation, and they are required for licenses in most states. Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT) obtain a degree in cardiopulmonary sciences, preferably a bachelor , and take a two part assessment given by the AARC. After successful completion of these requirements, a license can be obtained to practice. Many people will obtain the first credential, and then work for a while. After 2-3 years experience they decide to go back to school and finish their education. As you can see, it is not necessary to spend years in school and then discover that you do not like your job. It is a demanding job, mentally and physically, and it is not for everyone. So don’t let the salary of a respiratory therapist be the deciding factor on this career.

Demand for both CRTT and RRT is high, as for everyone in healthcare. If you decide that you do not like the particular requirement your job has, you can be cross trained in a related field very easily and change jobs within your hospital. Perhaps you love the job, but want to specialize in working with neonates. Further education, within your hospital or at a college, will allow you to pursue your dream. If the hospital needs are too stressful, a home care position may be just what you need. RT’s work in every department of the hospital, from ER , L&D , and ICU to the sleep lab and the EKG department. Some respiratory therapists work in long term care facilities, while others see patients in their home of SNF. There has been a lot of dialog going on about using RTs in Pulmonary physicians offices, but as far as I know this has not happened yet.

The specific qualifications you will need depends on your hospitals protocols and practice. Since you are working directly with patients , a pleasant manner and ability to persuade people is highly desirable. Communication with RNs and MDs needs to be succinct yet informative, because these people will make decisions based on your information. Some times the task at hand will be unpleasant, and you must be able to maintain control of your own biological responses. For example, ventilating a patient with an open chest means you must resist the strong urge to vomit, since that will be fatal to the patient.

Dialysis TechnicianYou may realize by now that you must go through a good deal of training to become a Dialysis Technician. But do you have what it takes to make it through and be successful in this career? You should really consider these factors before making the decision to become one.

First, you have to be able to make it through schooling. This requires a great deal of mechanical aptitude to run the machines, as well as scientific aptitude to understand the medical aspects of what you are doing. Dialysis machines can be tricky to run properly, and you must be able to see, understand and handle side effects of the treatments.

Next, you need to consider the physical aspects of the job. Are you able to stand for long periods of time? Can you make routine movements with your hands and wrists without pain? You must be able to run multiple machines with multiple patients in most centers. This could mean long hours on your feet, moving from patient to patient, and constantly setting up, tearing down, and sterilizing machines.

The mental aspects of the job are clear. A Dialysis Technician must be able to think on their feet, as well as manage multiple patients at one time. Being a fast reader will help you double check charts and make sure you are keeping patients on the proper treatment for the proper amount of time. Being able to remember names will help you interact with patients and make them more comfortable. You should also be able to remember many facts at one time to help keep patients going on their treatments without making mistakes.

Finally, consider the emotional aspects of the job. In a center, you will be seeing the same faces from day to day. While you need to be nice to the patients and perhaps even chat with them to keep them relaxed, this interaction can cause attachment. If you have a tendency toward these attachments, this may not be the career for you. Patients will come and go, some may not recover from their illnesses and pass on. Some will move, some will recover, but whenever a patient leaves your facility for any reason you will need to be able to take it in stride and not let it personally effect you. There is an emotional distance that must be maintained, and you must have the ability to maintain it.

Dialysis Tech Requirements:

In order to become a Dialysis Technician, you must have at least a high school diploma. Through high school, taking classes in science and health are helpful and a great base for pursuing this career. You then must also get certification from a state-supported program at a college, university, hospital or technical school.

As a dialysis tech you will need to know the how to set up and operate the various dialysis equipment. In order to get a Dialysis Technician certificate and license, you’re required to have a certain number of training hours under your belt. It may also be of interest to you to look into taking some courses to help you deal with social and or psychological issues you would potentially encounter. Mechanical intuition is a great talent to have in this field, if you don’t find yourself savvy in such a way you may want to look for ways to improve this aspect. You can get this kind of training in a hospital where you can be trained how to handle the dialysis machinery by a scheduled nurse.

How Much Does Hair Grow In A Month

So you want to know how much hair grows in a month? Well let’s first look at what hair is and how it grows.

The Cuticle, cortex and medulla are the  3 main layers of the hair. Cuticle is the outer layer of the hair and it is thin and colorless. The cuticle is responsible for offering protection to the cortex which is the thicker part of the hair strand. The cortex contains melanin which is the part of the hair strand that is responsible for determining the color of the hair. The color of the hair will depend on the kind of melanin one has out of two kinds which are; eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanin is the kind of melanin that develops black hair and brown hair. The people who have black hair or brown hair have eumalanin which those with reddish hair have pheomelanin which is the kind of melanin responsible for reddish hair. Those people with blonde hair are a result of melanin being low in their hair. Gray hair due to lack of melanin and this is caused by aging or even illnesses and high stress levels.  The medulla is responsible for giving the hair the different shades when it is hit by light. Medulla reflects light and this is why hair will look different in light than when one is under shade. Cortex determine the shape of the hair, straight-cortex makes the hair straight but when the cortex is oval shaped in the mid section, most probably you’ll have a curly hair.

Having said this about what hair is formed of, we can know look at how hair grows. Hair growth happens in 3 phases. These are  Catagen Anagen,and Telogen. Anagen is the kind of growth that takes place between the longest periods of between two to eight years in someone’s life. During this phase, the growth cells which are in the papilla divide and develop the hair shaft which then becomes keratinized while it pops out of the follicle into the pore. During this time, the follicle also does grow deeper to try to get into the dermis where it gets nourishment from the blood. This determines the difference between the people who have long hair and those who have short hair. The people who have longer hair than others have a longer anagen period which enable them grow long hair while those who have short hair have a shorter anagen period. Catagen is the period that follows anagen period.  This period lasts about two to four weeks only. In this period, the hair stops growing and the follicle are degraded. However, the hair does not fall. Telogen period is where the hair does not show growth at all but remains attached to the follicle.

How much does hair grow in a month

If one does not cut their hair for a period of twelve months, it will go about 12 inches and 48 inches long. This translates to about half an inch every month. So the answer to your question of how much can hair grow in a month is, hair grows half an inch every month. This growth takes place during the anagen period. However, about an average of 12 percent of the hair is in telogen period at any one time in one’s life.
