All About Person Centered Therapy

Person centered therapy is a talking therapy which was developed in the years 1940-1950. This type of psychotherapy is also known as client centered therapy or person centered psychotherapy. The person centered therapy was first developed by a psychologist called Carl Rogers.

While applying this therapy a very comfortable environment is created. A general genuineness and an optimistic attitude are directed towards the patient’s problems.

In this therapy the patient is encouraged to find solutions to their own problems.  In the person centered therapy a psychologist is required to help the patient by providing him with a therapeutic relationship.

This therapy forms the very basis of psychotherapies. Carl Roger also stressed on the closeness and the trust and faith which should exist between the client and the therapist. The person centered therapy stresses on the fact that the success of any kind of treatment depends upon the therapist’s optimistic and genuine attitude towards the client’s problems and not the therapist’s skills.

While using this therapy Carl Roger pointed out that 6 things are needed when efforts are being made to change the personality of that particular individual. They are as follows:



-the client should not be anxious and should show trust in the therapist

-the client should also believe in the genuineness of the therapist

-the therapist should be very optimistic throughout the therapeutic procedure



Person centered therapy is used mainly to increase the person’s self esteem. This therapy also aims to increase the general self confidence of the patient and thereby reducing any kind of guilt factors which may exist within them. By using this therapy a better self understanding is created within an individual.

While practicing this therapy the therapist listens to the client carefully without showing any signs of judgment. He does not interrupt the patient by trying to help him with any kind of advice.


Applications of the person centered therapy:


This therapy was first developed by Carl Roger in a children’s centre. This therapy however is not specific to any age group and can be practiced on any age group population and a wide range of people suffering from different kinds of problems.

Person centered therapy can be practiced on

-people suffering with alcoholic withdrawal symptoms


-in individuals who suffer from any kind of depression

-used to treat anxiety

-individuals suffering from various kinds of personality disorders

This therapy can be used on an individual basis or in groups to overcome the problem which affects the individual.

While the person centered therapy is being practiced, the therapist generally use a one hour session. The client can visit the therapist whenever needed. The client can also decide when to stop the therapy if he feels confident enough of dealing with the various problems that may have to be faced by him in the future.

In most conditions the client seems to be more confident, with better self esteem, improvement in decision making capacity, the general sense of insecurity and guilt seems to be largely reduced.

The therapy may not be successful if the client does not believe in the therapy itself and may not show interest in the therapy. In such a condition no improvement is seen in the overall personality of the patient.
