Becoming A Radiology Technologist

The job of a radiology technologist is very technical in nature. They have to operate heavy machinery that is very advanced and technical to take x rays, ultrasounds and administer nonradioactive material as well as this is a very common procedure often utilized in cases where more clarity is required for accurate diagnosis. Therefore a radiology technologist is a very important person in any health facility, be it a health clinic or a hospital, a radiology technologist is the person who knows how to operate the equipment to assist the doctors and surgeons in carrying out their diagnosis.

The work of a radiology technologist is further categorized based on the specialized area that he or she excels in. some radiology technologist go for specialization in diagnostic imaging technologies that involve either magnetic resonance imaging commonly referred to as MRI or computerized tomography otherwise commonly referred to as CT. A radiology technologist is also required to take X rays of various parts of the patient’s body that help the doctors in making a diagnosis. This is why a radiology technologist is sometimes also called a radiographer.

When a radiology technologist has to take X rays or other procedures he or she is also required to prepare the patient’s for the process. Therefore another area of skill required by a radiology technologist is here when dealing with patients involving patient care and compassion so that they feel at ease during the procedure. Another sensitive area is that during these processes a radiology technologist needs to be skilled enough so that unnecessary exposure of radiation can be controlled. The radiology technologist does this by using lead shields or using other techniques like collimation to limit the size of X ray beam.

Other skills required by a radiology technologist is knowing how to set the equipment used for radiographic purposes at an angle and height that will allow the process to be carried out in the most proficient manner possible. Likewise the radiology technologist also has to using high tech measuring tape to measure the thickness of the area that has to be radiographer. The controls on the equipment also need to be set by the radiology technologist for the perfect contrast, detail and density. The radiology technologist is responsible for placing the X ray under the part of the patient’s body. Finally they have to be able to make some basic judgments about the films produced.
