Calcitriol Vitamin Uses

Calcitriol is a vitamin d capsule that is used to treat kidney failure a bone disease that happens when your kidneys fail to maintain the correct amount of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Calcitriol is normally produced in the kidneys, which controls the absorption of calcium and phosphate in the intestine.

If you are given calcitriol, there are a few things you should do first, always consult with your doctor if you:

  • Are trying for a baby, pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Taking any other medication
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction
  • If you suffer from metastic calfication

If you forget, take a dose of your medicine try to take it as soon as you remember unless it is near the time of your next dose. Do not double dose!

Calcitriol is also used to treat rickets, which is a softening of the bones in children due to lack of vitamin d, and osteomalacia, which is a softening of the bones in adults due to lack of vitamin d. 

When taking calcitriol it is important you have the correct diet, if you have too much food that contains calcium you could experience some serious side effects the same as to if you were not to receive enough calcium from other foods. If this is the case then calcitriol will not control your condition. If you are taking this medicine and you do not have a kidney disease you should take it with plenty of water if it is through a kidney disease then you should discuss what amounts you need to drink with your doctor.

Calcitriol can cause many side effects such as headaches, vomiting, upset stomach, sluggishness, constipation, dry mouth, bone and muscle pains,  metallic like taste in the mouth, increased thirst, decreased appetite, weight loss, hives, rashes, itching, runny nose, fever or chills, pail fatty stools, irregular heartbeat, decreased sex drive, yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you experience any severe side effects, you should consult your doctor immediately.

You should also keep a list of any other prescription or non-prescription medicines you are also taking just in case you go into hospital and anytime you visit your doctor. It is important to try to keep all of your appointments with your doctor to monitor your situation closely and correctly. Calcitriol is also known as rocaltol.
