Learning problems are quite often and one may wonder what could be the problem with you sometimes when you find yourself having difficulty with your academic functioning, or even having difficulty with doing some of your academic tasks. You may find that your reading is slightly slower than the other colleagues or having to read a passage over and over again before you understand it and sometimes spending more time reading than the rest of your classmates. The counselor will look closely at your background information such as personal, academic, medical and other information will help the counselor identify the root cause of your learning problem. It should not be decided that one has a learning problem before taking a thorough examination of the factors that surround that problem. Interventions in such areas like organization of the learner, desire to stay in a given college, learning /revision strategies, etc, will help determine wether one has a serious learning problem or not.
If you discover that you have a learning problem, you can start on a help yourself study brochures on some of the major topics like, time management, coping with procrastination, studying for tests, improving on concentration and many others that are available on market. Or you can consult an expert in academic performance improvement, where you join a group of others with similar challenges and go through a program together with the expert to help you identify, cope and overcome most of the challenges you might be facing in your learning. You can also develop your own checklist to establish if you have a learning problem. You may come up with a list of questions about your learning and the learning environment that can help you identify gaps that might exist within you and require immediate action and you can work out your own program to overcome those learning problems.
