Hemorrhoids are defined as swollen and painful veins in the lower part of rectum and anus. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids you may complain of bleeding usually in drops before or during passage of stools, which may or may not be associated with pain, accompanied by a sensation or an actual swelling coming out of the anus. The bleeding is caused due to rupture of tiny blood vessels in the lower part of your rectum and anus. You may suffer from increased bleeding, if you have irregular bowel habits and pass hard stools and need to strain while passing stools. The amount of bleeding will vary depending on the size of the blood vessel injured. If you have been suffering from piles over a long duration, they may get thrombosed, prolapsed and you may complain of severe pain at the anus. Thrombosed prolapsed piles can make defecation quite painful; in fact you may experience severe pain even during normal activities like sitting and walking.

The main cause due to which you may be suffering from hemorrhoids is long standing constipation. Over the years if you have been passing hard stools and require straining for defecation, you may be a candidate heading to develop piles. Due to straining and the local pressure of hard stools, the blood vessels in the rectum and anus, become lax and dilate over a period of time. Depending on the degree of piles you are suffering from, your hemorrhoids may not protrude out of the anus as a swelling or may protrude out during stools and require manual repositioning or may constantly protrude out of the anus and not respond to any manual attempts of reduction.

In order to prevent development of hemorrhoids or prevent worsening of your condition, you must ensure that you do not continue to suffer from constipation. For this, you must make changes in your diet. To begin with, you must consume plenty of oral fluids per day by way of water, juices, soups, beverages etc. Also ensure that you consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet, which will provide you with the much needed roughage to clear your bowels.

There are a few home remedies you may try to ease the local swelling, pain and bleeding. However final diagnosis, evaluation and plan of treatment must be decided on by your doctor. In severe cases surgery might be required.

Hemorrhoid treatment at home

At home you may try Sitz baths. For this, you can fill you bath tub with three to four inches of warm water and sit in the tub for around 15 mins. Do this thrice a day for a few days, till you find your symptoms are relieved. This helps subside the local inflammation and give you instantaneous relief from pain. Similarly for the local swelling and pain, dab some amount of petroleum jelly or zinc oxide on to a cotton swab and apply it around your anal region.

Take a teaspoon of Psyllium seeds thrice a day along with your meals. Psyllium seeds are known for their high fiber content, which will help to clear your bowels and prevent constipation.
