Lichen Simplex Chronicus is a disease of the skin which if not treated may develop into a chronic itching and scratching problem. This disorder is mainly found in little children but can sometimes affect adults also. Some of the people who are likely to get this disease include people who have a lot of stress, depression, anxiety or some other kind of problem that may be affecting them psychologically. It is mostly reported in children who constantly scratch their skin when they get an insect bite or some kind of itch on their skin. Basically this disease is caused when a person constantly scratches their body, if you have an itch and you scratch, it usually causes the skin to become thick and when the skin becomes thick it will become itchy and so you will keep scratching not knowing that you are only increasing the problem.
Some of the symptoms that are related to Lichen Simplex Chronicus may include; itching skin, skin lesion, scaling and some other skin complications that may be unique to each individual that has the disease. When you suspect that you or someone close to you is suffering from this disorder you must quickly seek professional help. Usually the doctor will examine the physical symptoms of the skin and ask about the history of the itching; sometimes the doctor may even have to carry out a skin lesion biopsy just so they can be sure of the complication.
Lichen Simplex Chronicus should be prevented instead of being treated because it is easier that way. If people are aware of the effects that constant scratching of the skin may have on their health, they will be more careful and will avoid getting this complication. However in the case of an already existing disorder the doctor may prescribe some lotions that have the ability to reduce the itchiness of the skin and thereby reduce it or eradicate it completely. There are also some cases where the affected person is taken through a series of counselling sessions and they are taught about the effects that scratching may have on them. There are also other medication techniques that may include injections and other oral medicines that can be used to treat this disorder. In people who have the complication because of stress the best way of treatment is to try and reduce their stress levels through the various means that may be available.
Basically this disorder is caused by scratching and stress and therefore the best way to manage it is by behaviour change. You may try all kinds of treatment but if you do not change your behaviour then you are most likely to continue suffering from this chronic disorder. Parents must also ensure that they observe their children and if the child starts to develop a scratching disorder they must take the necessary steps to reverse the trend as soon as possible.
