As the name suggests ingrown toenails occur when a nail grows inward instead of outward. This condition can be very painful if not treated fast because the nail that grows inward will eventually tear into the skin and may very well lead to other serious infections. This condition is not so common among children but in adults it can be very problematic. The condition is very common among men than in women. Most of the time this condition is experienced in the big toe but in some cases the problem may occur in other nails or toes. If not treated fast and effectively this condition has the potential to develop into an even bigger problem which may very well require some form of surgery.
One of the causes of ingrown toenails is wearing shoes that fit too tightly. When you put on shoes that are too tight, you apply pressure on the nails which in turn get pushed inside instead of growing outside. Another common cause of this condition is nail trimming. If you do not make sure that the nails have been trimmed well they may grow without form or order and this may cause then to dig into your skin or flesh. Some disorders such as fungal infections may also cause the nails to thicken which in turn may make them grow inward.
Damage to the nails may also be a cause of this condition, when you get involved in an injury that specifically involves your nails this problem may develop. There are also higher chances of this condition in people who may be related, what this means is that if a member of your family suffers from this condition it is likely that you may also experience it, this may be due to the nature of formation of your family’s nails. When you have this condition, you will most likely realize that the end of you toe will start turning reddish in colour and may develop some mild pain.
After some time some abnormal tissue or skin may start to develop on the edges of your nail which may later lead to a yellowish discharge. If you do not deal with this condition fast you may develop some kind of infection which may mean that the pain will increase and the area infected may become an eyesore. The people who should visit the doctor as soon as possible when they realize they have this condition are people like those with diabetes, those who may be suffering from aids or those people who may have a less than normal immune system. This problem is usually easily diagnosed by a physical examination and a casual checking of history which may include questions about the events that may have led to its development.
If you are already suffering from ingrown toenails condition, then you should always seek medical care or do some research on how you can implement a home care technique.
