Hypothyroidism – The Many Causes and Symptoms With Treatment

When someone suffers from a deficiency of the thyroid hormone it is called hypothyroidism. This disorder is often caused by a deformity, or abnormality, of the thyroid, hypothalamus and or pituitary gland. If someone has an underdeveloped or small thyroid gland then they will often suffer from hypothyroidism as well. Another less common cause of hypothyroidism is when iodine-131 has been used in a recent attempt to remove thyroid cancer and when infants suffer from it, it is called cretinism hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism Symptoms

Symptoms of hypothyroidism differ between the two main stages: early and late. The following symptoms are for adults with early stage hypothyroidism.

  • Pale complexion
  • Cramps and pain within the muscles and joints
  • Cold temperature sensitivity
  • Fatigue, depression, constipation, goiter
  • Withering muscles
  • Thin and weak fingernails that easy break
  • Unusual absence of sweat
  • Itchy, dry skin
  • Water retention; gaining weight from water weight
  • Unusually slow heart beat (less than 60 bpm) also known as bradycardia

The following are the symptoms for those suffering from late stages of hypothyroidism:

  • Variety of early stage symptoms here and there
  • Slowing speech capabilities accompanied by a hoarse speaking voice
  • Puffed skin in the facial areas
  • Outer part of eyebrow hair begins thinning
  • For women, unusual periods (menstruation)
  • Unusually low body temperature

There are many uncommon symptoms that occur with hypothyroidism from time to time. Here is a list of the rare, but occurring symptoms sometimes associated with hypothyroidism.

  • Slow reflexes
  • Discomfort and inability or difficult to swallow
  • Mood changes with irritability and anxiety
  • Lack of sex drive
  • Gynecomastia
  • Loss of hearing
  • Loss of senses like smelling and tasting
  • Psychosis
  • Elevated cholesterol serum
  • Abnormal renal functions
  • Skin with a yellow tone due to inability to convert beta-carotene to vitamin A
  • Tired all the time, must have sleep
  • Trouble breathing, weak chest, short breathes only
  • Low iron (anemic)
  • Loss of hair (alopecia)
  • Variant of hypoglycemia
  • Decrease heart rate
