Glipizide is one of the drugs to control diabetes. This is taken orally. Glipizide belongs to the second generation of sulfonylurea family.
Mode of action of Glipizide:
Glipizide acts on the beta cells of islets of langerhans by blocking the potassium channels partially. By doing so, the calcium release increases and thereby increases the levels of insulin secretion from the beta cells of langerhans.
This drug does not have side effects on every individual who consumes this drug. However the Glipizide side effects can be very severe. Most individuals who take Glipizide as an anti-diabetic medication tolerate the drug well. In most cases the side effects are mild to moderate which at times improve on their own without any kind of treatment.
Some of the serious side effects of Glipizide are listed below:
A) Sometimes the sugar level in the body increases drastically due to Glipizide, the symptoms of which are as follows:
- increased thirst
- increased hunger
- frequent urination
- short breath
- nausea vomiting
B) Sometimes the sugar level in the body falls due to Glipizide, the symptoms of which are as follows:
- increased hunger
- cold sweats
- speech difficulty
- changes in vision, the vision starts to blur
- loss of coordination
- seizures are seen sometimes
C) Sometimes damage to the liver occurs as a side effect of Glipizide. The signs of which are as follows:
- jaundice which clinically presents as a yellow discoloration of the patients skin and sclera
- dark colored urine
- abdominal pain which is mainly concentrated in the upper right region
- the skin gets easily bruised and starts to bleed.
D) Some individuals suffer from allergic reactions as a side effect of Glipizide. The symptoms of which are as follows:
- skin rash which is accompanied by constant itching
- breathing difficulties
E) Chest pain
G) Heart palpitations
H) Short breathe
The other general side effects of Glipizide include dizziness, diarrhea, tremors, some individuals complain of gases, nervousness. Few of the other individuals complained of general pain, cramping and pain in the abdominal region, depression, sweating, blurry vision, concentration loss, and signs of low blood sugar. These side effects were seen only in some individuals on whom clinical trials of Glipizide were done.

This medication has also seen to interact with alcohol causing stomach upset, vomiting, cramping, tremors and profuse sweating.
This medication can also act of the various blood vessels in the body which can in turn prove to be fatal.
Glipizide side effects are not seen in every individual who takes this medicine. It is still one of the widely used medications to treat diabetes. It is also not possible for the clinician to know if the person will be affected by the side effects of Glipizide beforehand.
