The lacrimal gland is situated right above the corner of our eyes and its main function is to produce tears. The lacrimal apparatus exists in our eyes which the lacrimal gland is a main part. The lacrimal gland is responsible for forming tears and then conveying them through the ducts of our eyes to be shed. The tears that lacrimal gland produce, help in keeping the eye lubricated and protected. Furthermore they help in clearing the eye. The tears produced by the lacrimal gland bring necessary nutrients and oxygen to the cornea. The function of lacrimal gland is to wash away all waste products thus protecting the cornea from infection.
When any problem occurs to the lacrimal gland it results in infection to the cornea or in worst cases it can result in inflammation or even tumor of the glands. When the lacrimal gland is not functioning problem the bacteria or viral infection can cause serious problems. If you ever feel any swelling near the eye you should immediately go to the doctor to get your lacrimal gland checked. If you are lucky to arrive early you can have your lacrimal gland returned to normal simply by antibiotics. However problems with the lacrimal gland are painful and can cause great discomfort.
Another scary problem resulting with the dis-functioning of the lacrimal gland is tumor. There are two kinds of tumors of lacrimal gland. The first kind of lacrimal gland tumor is called the benign while the second kind is called malignant. The malignant kind of tumor of lacrimal gland is quite rare. The lacrimal gland tumor is most commonly found in older people as compared to younger. In some few cases the lacrimal gland tumor has also been found in teenagers. The lacrimal gland tumor varies from one case to another. In the least dangerous case it might cause only a slight swelling of the outer eye lid. However in the most severe cases of lacrimal gland tumor can cause dangerous drooping of the eyelid causing interference with the patient’s vision.
The good thing is that lacrimal gland tumor and other problems related with the lacrimal gland can be prevented simply by maintain a good hygiene level for the eye. Wear shades whenever you go out especially if you live in dusty areas. If you live in a climate that is very dry use eye drops to keep your eyes moist and lubricated.
