Before I begin explaining what stress echocardiogram is, let me explain what echocardiogram itself is. Echocardiogram is the word used to refer to the outline of one’s heart movement. There are various ways in which this process can be performed out of which one type is the stress echocardiogram. In stress echocardiogram the patient is required to perform any exercise like run on a treadmill or ride a stationary bicycle. While the patient‘s heart is still pumping, the stress echocardiogram procedure is performed which helps to get a picture of the patient’s heart walls and to monitor the pumping action while the heart is stressed out by the exercising. In the stress echocardiogram procedure, doctors find out whether there is a lack of blood flow or not. Procedures other than the stress echocardiogram are not that good in pointing this out.
The stress echocardiogram process is carried out twice. First before the patient exercising and then a stress echocardiogram after the patient has stopped exercising. This process is really good in figuring out whether the patient’s arteries are blocked or not. To find out whether there are other heart conditions as well, other procedures along with the stress echocardiogram are performed. Stress echocardiogram involves two things. The first is the one mentioned above in which the patient is required to exercise on a treadmill. However in some cases the stress echocardiogram cannot be performed using a treadmill because the patient is physically unable to exercise. In such cases the stress echocardiogram is performed by giving the patient a drug that stresses the heart.
After that, in stress echocardiogram an ultrasound is taken of the patient’s heart to get an image. Two images are taken in stress echocardiogram. One image is of the heart while it’s resting and the second image is of the heart after it has been stressed. The difference in the stress echocardiogram helps doctors see what the strained effect is. Along with this, in stress echocardiogram the patient is also connected to and ECG which is the abbreviation of electrocardiograph, so that the doctor can monitor continuous readings.
To carry out the stress echocardiogram the patient has to be prepped up by making him or her wear loose clothing and joggers for the exercise part. Other than that, patients are advised to not eat for at least three hours before their stress echocardiogram is conducted.
