What is memory loss or Amnesia? It is an unusual degree of forgetfulness and or inability to remember past events. Memory loss can be gradual or sudden, temporary or permanent. It may be loss of one’s ability to remember recent events, events from the past, or even a combination of both. The type of memory loss depends on its cause.
What causes loss of memory? There are various causes for memory loss. Symptoms of memory loss are generally detected by someone very close and familiar with the affected person and may usually go unnoticed by others. Therefore, diagnosis is difficult. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate between normal forgetfulness and or memory loss due to a condition, disease or brain damage. One of the first symptoms may be confusion or decreased alertness. It is usually seen in older adults. Symptoms can vary from forgetting dates, names or one’s keys, to getting lost, having difficulty in performing familiar tasks such as driving, making tea. Some patients have severe symptoms which can be a concern. These include having difficulty in conversing, inability or difficulty in understanding, mixing up words of objects, inability to make decisions. If you or a loved one shows any of these signs a visit to the doctor can be helpful.
Memory loss can’t be treated unless it is from a reversible condition. One can take certain precautions such as wear a seat belt when driving and a helmet while biking thus preventing chances of head trauma. Avoiding abuse of alcohol, drugs, and exposure to toxins can also keep one safe from chances of memory loss. Having a healthy diet and reducing stressful factors can prevent symptoms of memory loss. Dietary supplements such as Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Zinc, Copper etc. can aid in preventing or delaying age related memory loss. Age related loss of memory is caused by inactive and unhealthy brain cells. Spend time with friends and family, as socializing always makes one feel good, and it is also beneficial if you suffer from memory loss. Patients who suffer from severe loss of memory a routine should be created and followed. Making lists, keeping a calendar, placing objects in one place thereby making it easier to remember.
