The Lethal Nature of Paraquat Poisoning

Paraquat poisoning first started off when the United States launched Paraquat and promoted it to be used as a weed killer. It was supplied in Mexico abundantly and it’s highly toxic in nature. This is where the paraquat poisoning first began. When further research was conducted after several cases of paraquat poisoning were caught, scientists found out how dangerous it was for even the workers who used it for plants. Paraquat poisoning can occur even if a person breathes or swallows in the toxic Paraquat fumes. The United States requires people to get a license before being eligible to purchase Paraquat and had especially termed it as a “commercial use only” product.

When workers work with Paraquat, while applying it on plants, they breathe in some of its toxic substance. This goes directly inside and damages the workers lungs and causes a serious disease called paraquat poisoning. And the damage done by paraquat poisoning is not only limited to the lungs. The minute it enters the body it starts causing damage, starting from the lining of the mouth, intestines and stomach. Paraquat poisoning is especially dangers if you have a cut somewhere on your skin and the fumes touch that area. On top of all that paraquat poisoning causes damage to one’s kidney, esophagus and liver.

Paraquat poisoning is extremely lethal. If a person, accidently or purposefully, swallows Paraquat he or she will die instantly. The cause of death by paraquat poisoning is known to be immediate holes in the esophagus, or because of acute inflammation that can occur to the mediastinum, which is that particular area surrounding all the blood vessels and airways that we have in the middle of our chest. Paraquat poisoning can also cause pulmonary fibrosis which is a medical term used to describe the stiffening of the tissues of our lungs. Therefore paraquat poisoning is a very serious and lethal thing which should be dealt with, with extreme caution.

If you have been using Paraquat or fear you are having paraquat poisoning you should check for certain symptoms. The paraquat poisoning symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, and sore throat, shortness of breath, shock, seizures, nosebleed, coma, or burns in the throat. If you feel you are having any of these symptoms related to paraquat poisoning you should waste no time in going to the doctor. For diagnosis purposes for paraquat poisoning urine and blood tests will be taken to see the amount of Paraquat you have inhaled.
