The Simple Facts of Colon Cleansing – It’s Not as Scary as You Think it is

Colon cleansing dates back to ancient Greece. Colon cleansing includes a number of alternative medical therapies intended to clean the system by removing the toxins from the colon and intestinal tract. It is also known as colon hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation. There are a number of reasons that the colon may need cleansing.

The main reason for colon cleansing is the concept of ‘auto-intoxication’, i.e. the concept that food enters the intestine and rots. This is the belief that undigested meat and other foods cause a buildup in the colon. This buildup produces toxins which enter the blood’s circulation, as per the theory, poisoning the body. Some people feel these toxins cause a wide range of symptoms, such as: fatigue, headache, weight gain and low energy.

According to the ancient Egyptians, the toxins were a result of decomposition within the intestines, which moves from there into the circulatory system and creates further toxins in the body. In the nineteenth century the studies of biochemistry and microbiology supported the auto intoxication theory. This topic was strongly promoted by Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, who felt that that these toxins could shorten one’s life. In time the concept extended to ‘’auto intoxication’’, which assumes that the human body cannot dispose the toxins and waste, which in time get accumulated in the intestine. In rare cases, it could lead to the radical surgeries to remove the colon. Some kinds of colon hydrotherapy use tubes to inject water, at times mixed with herbs and other liquids, into the colon using special equipment. Oral methods use dietary fiber, herbs or laxatives.

Colon cleansing is also done before a surgery, colonoscopy or similar procedures. When the colon is cleansed the whole bowel irrigation can be performed.
The two methods of colon cleansing are –

• Colon cleansing with powdered or liquid supplements

o Supplements can be taken orally or through the rectum. Either way the main idea is to force the colon to expel its contents. Some of the products used to cleanse the colon in this manner are – enemas, laxatives, strong herbal teas, enzymes and powders.

• Colon cleansing with colon irrigation (high colonics) :-

The machine first used for colon irrigation was invented over a century ago. Today the procedure is performed by colon hygienists or colon therapists. Colon irrigation works similar to an enema. But a lot of water is used and it does not have much of odor or discomfort as an enema. When one is lying down on a table, a machine or gravity driven pump flushes 20 gallons of water through a tube inserted in the rectum. Once the water is in the body the therapist massages the abdomen. The therapist then flushes out the fluids through another tube. The process may be repeated and may take up to an hour. The therapist may use different types of water pressures and temperatures and may or may not combine the two procedures.
