Transesophageal Echo | What You Should Know

Various tests are available for controlling and monitoring the functioning of the heart and so adequate test style procedure must be selected in the correct manner so that desired results are attained easily. Transesophageal echo uses a high frequency sound waves; it is that kind of test that uses ultrasound transducer which is guided down into the patient’s throat. The instrument that is used is called the endoscope and it allows the process to be successful over time. This test enables a closer look to be made on the hearts organs and components such as the valves and the chambers without any form of interference anyhow by the ribs and the lungs.  

The requirements of this tests usually arise from the doctors need to have a very closer look on the heart components. Another issue that leads to the use of this process also is the poor performance of the standard echo tests and so better results will therefore be desired from the process. Doppler may be combined with this test so as to provide the best evaluation of the blood flow in the heart across these heart valves.

Transesophageal echo test has got several reasons for it being performed on human heart; the overall functioning of the chambers and the heart valves will be monitored easily, various types of diseases can be known easily when this test is performed, valve surgery can be evaluated on its effectiveness and finally abnormalities can be known in the left atrium.   

The patient wishing to have this test will be required to avoid eating or drinking anything for about six hours before even though water can be allowed only to a period up to two hours before the test can be carried out. Medication can only be allowed with the smallest sip ever so that it may not result into unnecessary water in the body.

The patient will also be required to avoid activities such as driving to the hospital and out of the hospital after and before the test. Also patients are supposed to move around with few items with them so that storage may not become a problem during the treatment. Transesophageal echo finally is a procedure that will take at least ninety minutes and the patient must be in apposition to withstand that period at all costs so that normal and healthy living can be the results from such treatments.
