Understanding and Managing Mucocele Treatment

Mucocele is a type of swelling that usually occurs in the mouth, this swelling usually occurs when a salivary gland is blocked or hurt in some way. What basically happens is that when a gland is blocked then saliva will accumulate at that particular spot and therefore will cause that area to swell it is that swell that is normally referred to as a mucocele. Sometimes this swelling may occur just under the tongue and grow to be very large when this happens the swelling is called a ranula although it is still the same type of problem. The most common swelling is usually that which appears on the lower lip however the swelling can also sometimes appear in other area of the mouth.

One of the reasons why this kind of swelling is very unpleasant is because they make it so hard for you to eat comfortably; they also sometimes burst and release some strawberry coloured fluid in the mouth. If not taken care of early enough these swellings may develop into deeper ones which are likely to last for a relatively longer time and which may also cause an unbearable amount of discomfort. Although these swellings are not painful they will make it very difficult for you to chew or to talk. The swellings are usually rubber like and when you go for a medical check up that is what the doctor usually looks for before he can make any other observations. When a doctor is checking you up they may ask you if you ever had an accident that injured that area of the mouth that is swollen or even if you bit that area because it is these kinds of problems that cause the swelling.

A mucocele can be removed by surgery but in most cases they disappear all by themselves. There are also some injections that may work when used for people who have these swellings. The best way to stay safe is to try and keep your mouth safe, avoid any activity that may bring injury to your mouth and also be careful not to bite you lips. Once the swelling is treated it is very possible for it to appear again and it is therefore advisable that you keep going for medical check up until you are absolutely certain that it is gone. If you get a swelling in your mouth that lasts for more than a week then that should be enough reason for you to seek professional assistance.
If treated well the mucocele will completely disappear and you will no longer have to worry about it, you can recover and become as healthy as if it was never there in the first place. The best way to stay safe is to always get help whenever you suspect that you may have such a swelling in your mouth.
