Spina Bifida Occulta is a condition that affects the spinal cord and the brain. This condition usually occurs when the brain and the spinal cord are not fully developed. This condition is more common in the western countries with the United States of America considered to be the greatest victim. This complications origin can be traced way back to the time when a human being is being formed in the body of the mother. Usually what happens is that in the first days of conception, the embryo forms a structure that eventually turns into the human brain and the spinal cord. It is however during this formation or process that sometimes the development is not very proper and t5huis results in some malformation of the brain or the spinal cord. When this malformation takes place, the result will always be a complication on the spinal cord or the brain of the newly born baby.
Spina Bifida Occulta does not have a definite cause. What this essentially means is that nobody knows the exact cause of this condition, although there have been several researches and studies that have tried to find the exact causes of the co9ndition, none has been conclusive and none has had any success in its findings. Having said that it is also important to note that there have been several reasons that have been theorised to be the cause, these include some kind of nutritional deficiency and sometimes effects of the climate and chemical substances.
Spina Bifida Occulta does not have any physical symptom but in some rare cases there may be an observance of a birthmark on the location where there is a malformation. There may also be a dimple or a clump of hair on that very location. Other symptoms of the condition that may be observed include a fluid sac that may protrude from the affected area; there may also be instances where the patient becomes paralysed. This condition is not very easy to detect in the early stages, in fact there are many cases that go without even the notice of the doctors. The best way to prove whether one has the condition is by the use of x-ray examinations.
Treatment of this condition is not very common and in most cases the patients do not even need treatment, however sometimes braces and wheelchairs are used. Basically this is one of the complications that are not very easy to prevent because nobody knows the exact cause. In most cases there is not much you can do about this condition but to try and cope with it and learn to live with it. The key to managing the condition is to try and seek professional care and advice on what you need to do and how you need to live with the condition.
