A Look At Tardive Dyskinesia Treatment

Tardive Dyskinesia is a disorder resulting in involuntary and repetitive body movements such as lip smacking, lip pursing rapid eye blinking, tongue protrusion and many other nonsense rapid body movements. Tardive dyskinesia is often misdiagnosed as a mental illness. But the truth is, it is a neurological disorder, which is often the result of after a prolonged use or use of antipsychotic drugs in high dosage. This could also occur in children after taking medications of gastrointestinal problems. Although tardive dyskinesia hasd been diagnosed over 50 years ago, the disorder is not fully understood by many specialists. Other than being believed to have primarily resulted from the use of neuroleptics, very little is still known about the disorder and tardive dyskinesia treatment had not been discovered.

Tardive dyskinesia treatment is impossible as of present time. There were several attempts done to cure the disorder but none had been proven to be truly effective. A tranquilizer called chloriazepoxide hydrochloride or also known as Librium has been used to cure the disorder. However, the tranquilizer was said to be habit-forming. Although some patients have claimed to have received temporal benefits from drug, its success to cure the disorder had not been great enough for it to be considered the proper treatment or drug. Currently, there is a drug called tetrabenazine that is being studied and researched to be used for tardive dyskinesia treatment. The drug is used to treat Huntington’s disease. It is a disorder that is characterized by involuntary movements that go from one to muscle to another. The drug helps in the metabolism of dopamine which is important in helping neurotransmitters function efficiently. The drug is also used to treat hyperkinetic or compulsive movements.

However, though tetrabenazine reduces the symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, it had also not been proven to be the right cure for the disorder. The drug also causes anxiety, dizziness, paranoia, drowsiness, fatigue and depression. So since, tardive dyskinesia treatment without any adverse effect is impossible at present, prevention of the disorder is still the primary shield against it. Another drug used to treat the disorder is Zofran. It had showed benefits in experimental studies but had not proven to be truly effective. Clonidine is also used for spasms and even botox injections are used for minor dystonia. An anticonvulsant called benzodiazepines had also been used and has proven to be effective in reducing the symptoms of the disorder however the use of the drug might cause a withdrawal syndrome after discontinuation. For patients who need neuroleptic medication, it is always best for patients and for doctors too to use the lowest effective dose of neuroleptic and for the shortest possible time. Although this can be a malady, because sometimes doctors and families are left with two tough choices: prevent recurrence of psychosis or deal with tardive dyskinesia. But, this is only for those with chronic psychosis such as schizophrenia. But for milder cases, if tardive dyskinesia is diagnosed, it is advised to discontinue the use of the drug that had caused it.

Parkinsons Symptoms – Detecting Early and Advance Stages

Parkinson’s disease is a motor system disorder. It is a slow progressing disease of the nervous system and studies show that higher percentages of men are affected by this disease than women. The cause of Parkinson’s disease is still unknown but it is linked to family genes and environmental factors. Aside from genetics, other factors that are associated with Parkinson’s disease are age, head trauma, stress, diet and way of living.

Most noticeable symptoms are shaking of the limbs or tremors and difficulty in doing simple movements and activities. Other Parkinsons symptoms are difficulty talking, difficulty in swallowing and in effect drooling or excessive salivating and imbalance.

Conducting medical history and neurological test are just some of the ways to diagnose if a person has Parkinson’s disease. Usually it is very difficult to accurately diagnose it and would require many tests before concluding that a person has Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinsons symptoms such as excessive shaking and tremors are usually in the advance stage of the disease. Even depressions and emotional imbalance are being linked to Parkinson’s disease. It is very rare that you can see symptoms during childhood. As the disease progresses there is more difficulty in movement because limbs are becoming rigid.

Tremors and shaking usually starts in the limbs and as it progresses, other parts of the body will also start to shake and become uncontrollable. Non-movement symptoms can be pain, soreness, depression and even constipation. Severe tremor is experienced especially if the patient is in great stress or anxious.

People who are suffering from these symptoms have difficulty performing their daily activities. Daily living becomes more difficult for them and they usually need the help of another person to be able to cope up as their disease progresses. Difficulty in speaking is another symptom. Speech exercises can be done to help lessen the problem in speaking.

Parkinson symptoms vary from one person to another though. Some may not experience the shaking and the tremors while others experience stiffness instead. Some symptoms are very mild and hard to detect and you would not know that you already have this neurological degenerative disease. Doctors might misdiagnose the symptoms the patient is experiencing and associate it with another disease.

Deep Brain Stimulation is a procedure that helps control these symptoms. Electrodes are implanted to the patient’s brain and this will help them to make a more coordinated movement and shaking and tremors are lessened.

Symptoms get worse as each day passes. Aside from medications prescribed to control these symptoms, additional treatments and therapies such as speech, occupational and physiotherapy are needed and the person who has Parkinson’s disease will very much benefit from these. It will also decrease the stress and depression they are already experiencing. Exercise and balanced diet also helps and being active during the early stage of the disease may reduce the progressing of the disease.

If you are experiencing Parkinsons symptoms, it is best to undergo tests the earliest possible. It is better to work closely with your doctor to be able to get the needed information regarding Parkinson’s disease. There is no cure as of the moment and medications are there only to decrease the symptoms and to help you cope with your everyday life.

Common Hep C Symptoms

Hepatitis C is one of those diseases that are hard to learn about not unless you conduct the right test to the right patient at the right time. This kind of disease is an asymptomatic disease. Hep C symptoms do not show up unless it is already in the more severe and complicated stage. It becomes asymptomatic because it does not show noticeable symptoms that are usually incorporated with hepatitis C. Like in all diseases, prevention is always better than cure that is why this disease of the liver needs to be prevented before it becomes difficult to cure.

Hep C symptoms in the acute stage are rather vague, and if they do show up, they can be easily mistaken as signs and symptoms of other illnesses. These symptoms can be easily thought of as symptoms for a common flu so people usually ignore them not knowing that they have hepatitis C without their knowledge.

Some Hepatitis C symptoms include itching, jaundice, fatigue, decreased appetite and other flu-like symptoms. There was even a practice in the past to not treat some patients in the acute stage to see whether hep c patients in the chronic stage will come out successfully, however, they found out that it is better to treat patient in the acute stage as they have a 90 percent success rate to being well.

In the chronic infection, hep C symptoms vary from one person to another; being asymptomatic is often discovered by accident, through usual check up, making it even difficult to treat because patients do not know whether they have hepatitis C not unless a medical examination is done. Chronic hepatitis C means that you are already infected with the virus for six months time, while acute hepatitis C means that you are a new carrier and had only been infected with the hepatitis C virus recently.

Urine that has dark color is another symptom of hepatitis C, and so are joints and belly pain. Hepatitis C has the tendency to damage the liver of a person infected with the virus very slowly. And, because the symptoms are not very evident severe liver damage may occur and even scarring, which is termed as cirrhosis.

Once cirrhosis occurs, symptoms are more prominent like palms that are red because of the swelling of the blood vessels. Other parts of the body will also swell, like the legs, the feet and the belly. The area in your face or shoulders or chest can have tiny red spots, which are clusters of blood vessels. Bleeding in the digestive tract also occurs in cirrhosis due to enlarged veins. Vericeal bleeding, bleeding in the digestive tract is a rather serious matter even if you have not encountered this symptom before. Encepalophaty will also occur, damage in the nervous system and the brain, this can cause concentration and memory problems and confusion in a patient. Always remember that patients should not wait for hep c symptoms to occur before they consult their doctor.

More Obesity among poorer women but not poorer men in America

Contrary to what many people think, poorer American males are not more likely to be obese than their richer counterparts; but adult females nearer the poverty levels are, according to a new report issued by the National Center for Health Statistics. Rates of adult male obesity are fairly similar throughout all income levels, the authors reveal, with a slight increase among higher income men.

The number of obese adults in the USA has been growing steadily for the last few decades and does not appear to be slowing down. 72 million US adults are estimated to be either obese or overweight today. Over 30% of all American adults are obese.

A number of studies have associated obesity with socioeconomic and educational levels. Unfortunately, the media has often extrapolated from very limited studies and spread a general impression that obesity is the poor man’s epidemic.

For this latest report, the researchers gathered data from NHANES (The national Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), a cross-sectional survey designed to monitor the nutritional status and health of the civilian, non-institutionalized American population. A sample of 5,000 (nationally representative) people was used.

They found that 41% of all obese adults live in households that earn $ 77,000 or more per year – 350% of poverty-level income. 39% of obese adults live in households that earn from 130% to 350% of poverty-level income. The remaining 20% live in households whose income is below $ 29,000 per year (130% of poverty-level income). In all cases, household income relates to a family of four. The vast majority of obese American adults are not poor.

29% of adult males who live in households below 130% of the poverty level are obese, compared to 33% in well-off households (at least 350% of poverty-level income).

42% of adult females in households below poverty-level income are obese, compared to 29% in the more affluent homes.

Education appears to have a more constant correlation with obesity across both sexes:

  • 42% of adult females without a high school education are obese
  • 23% of adult females with a college degree are obese
  • 32% of adult males without a high school education are obese
  • 27% of adult males with a college degree are obese

There is a stronger link between obesity and household income among children, the authors reveal. 21.1% of boys and 19.3% of girls in poor households are obese, compared to 11.9% of boys and 12% of girls in well-off houses.

What is obesity? What is BMI?

An obese person has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or more. People with a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9 are considered to be of normal weight. Those whose  BMIs are between 25 and 29.9 are overweight. A person may be considered as obese if their bodyweight is at least 20% higher than it should be.

BMI is a measurement derived from a person’s height and weight.

  • BMI metric units
Your weight (kilograms) divided by the square of your height (meters)
For example. 80 kg weight. 1.8 meters height.
    1.82 meters = 3.24
    80 divided by 3.24 = a BMI of 24.69
  • Imperial units
Pounds in weight times 703, divided by the square of your height in inches
For example. 190lbs weight. 72 inches (6ft) height.
    722 = 5,184
    190 x 703 divided by 5,184 = A BMI of 25.76

BMI is not 100% reliable

Many people say that BMI does not measure fat and lean tissue content, and is thus unreliable. For example, a 6ft Olympic Gold Medal 100 meter sprint champion may have a BMI much greater than a 6ft couch potato. But the couch potato will have much more fat (which weighs less than muscle or lean tissue), a bigger waist, and is most definitely not likely to be healthier than the athlete – on the contrary.

BMI calculation may be useful if everyone in a study has similar levels of physical activity. Hip-waist ratio measurements are said to be much better indicators of people’s proximity to their ideal weight. “Low in children and adolescent more likely to be obese”. National Center for Health Statistics

  • “Obesity Prevalence in Men similar at all income levels”

Childhood Appendicitis: Diagnosis and Treatment

The appendix is an extension of the colon, or large intestine.  This appendage has served to mystify physicians and researchers regarding its purpose in the human body.  According toLoren G. Martin, professor of physiology at Oklahoma State University, the appendix appears to perform functions related to the immune system.  Research indicate involvement of the appendix in the maturation of B lymphocytes, an important type of white blood cell, and the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies, which help the body fight off infectious pathogens.

What Is Appendicitis?

The appendix occasionally becomes infected, allowing the associated bacteria to proliferate.  This results in the appendix becoming inflamed and possibly obstructed, causing acute abdominal pain and other symptoms.  Occasionally, the infection causes the appendix to rupture, spilling harmful bacteria and toxins into the abdominal cavity. A ruptured appendix is a serious, and possibly fatal, development of appendicitis.

How Common Is Childhood Appendicitis?

Doctors diagnose approximately 80,000 children per year with appendicitis and commonly strikes between the ages of 10 and 20 years.  It is the most common reason children undergo emergent surgery of the abdomen.  Half of the minor patients who present with acute appendicitis have a family history of the condition.  Rupture of the appendix occurs in 30 percent of patients, but most commonly in those under the age of 5.

What Are the Symptoms in Children?

The common early signs of appendicitis, such as vomiting and nausea are often absent in children. Children with often complain of constipation or produce small amounts of stool containing mucus in the early stages of the disease.  They might have abdominal pain that may, or may not, be accompanied by a fever. Parents often think the symptoms appear like those of viral syndromes causing intestinal disturbances that their child has had and quickly overcome in the past.  If you feel the symptoms may indicate appendicitis, get to your local pediatric clinic immediately.  Since appendicitis symptoms in children are similar to those of other common childhood diseases, doctors often find it challenging to diagnose.

Are There Tests That Can Confirm Appendicitis?

If your child’s pediatrician suspects appendicitis, he will perform a manual examination of the abdominal area to check for focal pain and tender spots.  He will also order blood and urine tests, chest and abdominal X-rays, and a CAT scan to aid in confirming or eliminating the condition.  If the tests indicate appendicitis, he may tell you not to give your child anything to eat or drink from that point forward in preparation for surgery.

How Is Appendicitis Treated?

Doctors treat appendicitis by removing the appendix through a surgical procedure called an appendectomy.  Prior to and after surgery, your child will receive intravenous (IV) fluids and antibiotics to prevent post-surgery infection and complication.  The procedure requires a two to three day hospital stay, during which medical staff will monitor your child’s vital signs, check the surgical wound, and administer pain medications as needed.

Ruptured appendix occurs when the signs of appendicitis have been misdiagnosed and remained unchecked.  If this happens, serious complications or death can occur.  A ruptured appendix can cause peritonitis or abscess, which can lead to organ failure or death.  Surgery is still required to remove the ruptured appendix and to wash out any bacteria and fluid contents that spilled into the abdominal cavity.  The attending physicians will require a longer hospital stay for the child so they can closely monitor his recovery and allow the IV antibiotics to eliminate any remaining infection.

Post Surgery

Remember to follow all the pediatrician’s orders regarding bed rest for your child, wound cleaning, wound dressing, and medication.  Your pediatrician will ask you to follow up with an office visit seven to 10 days after surgery.  Call your pediatrician or head to an emergency room if you see swelling, redness, or increased bleeding at and around the incision area.

Shoulder Strengthening Exercises – Everyone should do them

One thing I have learnt is that if you don’t look after your shoulders, sooner or later they are going to let you down.  It’s not their fault; they’re just a dodgy design.  In the designer’s defence, the specification was quite demanding.

“We want a joint that can turn 360 degrees in any direction; we want to be able to wave our arms about, throw things as far as we can, lift heavy objects, swing from our arms from side to side, do hand stands occasionally, hang from our arms when climbing, oh yes, and I would quite like to be able to reach behind me without difficulty.”

And just to make the design even more demanding, I would like this joint to be low maintenance as well!

Which is where most of us go wrong!  Your shoulder joint is not low maintenance.  If you put that many demands on a joint you need to look after it.  So what does looking after a shoulder joint involve?

Exercise! Whether you are using your shoulders for sport or just normal day to day activity the best way to keep them healthy is exercise.  The part of your shoulder that you really need to focus on is your rotator cuff.  This is a group of four small muscles that help hold your shoulder in place and also help with that all important rotating movement that we enjoy; hence the name.

These four muscles form a cuff around the shoulder pulling the humerus (upper arm bone) into the socket of the shoulder joint.  They are the key to healthy shoulders; they take the strain whenever we lift something, they pull the shoulder together, stopping it from getting dislocated whenever we put it under load.

They are also the part of the shoulder that is most at risk of injury and an injury to the rotator cuff can be devastating, putting you out of action for several months.

Interestingly, if you damage a rotator cuff, the therapy will involve virtually the same shoulder therapy exercises that would have prevented the injury in the first place.  These aren’t difficult muscles to exercise, you don’t need to join a gym and start pumping weights, these are small muscles and gentle exercise is all they need to stay in shape and keep your shoulders healthy.

By focusing on exercising the rotator cuff muscles you can also significantly strengthen your whole shoulder.  Weight lifters often find, for example, that they hit a plateau when it comes to training.  By exercising and strengthening the rotator cuff muscles specifically, some weight lifters have reported as much as a thirty per cent increase in overall performance.  Think of the rotator cuff as the weakest link in a chain; the chain being your shoulder.  If you strengthen the weakest link, you strengthen the chain.

So start shoulder strengthening exercises today.  Ten minutes a day, three or four times a week will wake up those muscles, make you stronger and stop you suffering the shoulder injury that affects nearly eight million Americans every year.

Angioplasty is better than Bypass Surgery

In the past few years, the Indian medical industry has came a long way and people often find it relatively easy to find an esteemed cardiologist in Delhi or any other city of India. Today, one can find a large number of visitors coming to India to get quality heart treatment in India. Moreover, the use of advanced techniques has enabled Indian doctors to perform angiography or angioplasty treatment in India.

Angioplasty or Angiography can be described as a process of mechanically enlargement of a narrowed or hindered blood vessel; generally as a result of atherosclerosis. Under this process, a balloon catheter is entered into the narrowed locations and then inflated to a specific size using water pressures near 75 to 500 times the normal blood pressure. A balloon catheter is an unfilled and warped balloon on a guided wire.

Angioplasty involves all types of vascular interventions generally performed in a minimally persistent or injected method. According to various doctors, angioplasty is a better treatment than bypass surgery and it has been found that less than 1% of people die from abnormalities after this procedure. There are various issues that may arise after or during angioplasty. These issues may include allergic reaction to the dye used during the angioplasty, tearing of the artery, a dislodged clot, bleeding or bruising, and restenosis etc.

Angioplasty is meant to advance the symptoms of CHD, such as angina and shortness of breath. It also results into diminishing hurts to the heart muscle caused by a heart attack. A heart attack occurs if the blood passes through a coronary artery is completely blocked. This hindrance occurs due to a blood clot that results on the surface of the plate.

Most of the times, it is recommended to go to a renowned cardiologist in Delhi if going for angioplasty or angiography. This move makes sure that you will get world class heart treatment from the best cardiologist in Delhi.

Spotting During Early Pregnancy

Pregnancy, for most women I know or have met, is usually a time when they are at their most excited. This is usually as a direct result of the anticipation of new life. This anticipation and excitement can be short-lived and overshadowed by the fear that spotting or light bleeding causes.

Although this spotting is usually indicative of complications like miscarriages and ectopic pregnancy, it is not usually affirmative, and as such should not be worsened by the development of anxiety as a first course of action.

Spotting may also be due to problems which are not pregnancy related. A vaginal infection, for instance a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis or even a sexually transmitted infection causes your cervix to become irritated or inflamed. An inflamed cervix is particularly susceptible to spotting immediately after intercourse or following a Pap smear.

Infections- there are times that spotting occurs due to conditions not related to pregnancy. Yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection like trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, Chlamydia and herpes can cause the cervix to become irritated or inflamed. In this case, you are particularly prone to spotting after sexual intercourse or pap smear.

If spotting is followed by abdominal pain and cramping, this may be a sign you are having a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Its important to let your doctor know about any signs of blood or spotting, because a miscarriage could be life threatening, not only for you but also the baby.

Technically or biologically speaking, spotting is caused by the process of the thick bed of blood vessels in the endometrium as the blastocyst implants into the uterine wall. The blastocyst is the fertilized egg that has yet to implant into the uterine wall. Through this process, some blood natural is released from the uterine wall which is the cause of the spotting itself.

Ectopic pregnancy can also be a reason why some women experience pregnancy spotting. Implantation and thereafter, development of the baby outside the uterus can cause vaginal bleeding. Outside the uterus, the embryo mainly begins to develop in the fallopian tube, which is why this ectopic pregnancy is also termed as tubal pregnancy or molar pregnancy.

Dividing Egg Cell Burrowing into the Wall of the Uterus. This can also be caused by the action done by the dividing fertilized egg cell which clinging into the walls of the uterus, the organ where the developing baby is nourished and undergoes development.

Your doctor will usually do some physical checks, blood tests or ultra sound scans when you have spotting during early stages of pregnancy, to make sure the baby is fine. Meanwhile, ensure you rest and do not continue to exert yourself or do any form of exercises. Drop your housework too!

Another unfortunate reason why you may notice pregnancy spotting is if you are experiencing ectopic pregnancy. The fertilized egg (embryo) is supposed to embed or implant itself in the walls of the uterus; that is the ideal situation. If this does not happen, and anything else occurs, that is, if the embryo embeds itself inside of the fallopian tube, then you are said to have an ectopic pregnancy.

What Medicare Beneficiaries Should Know if They Have Diabetes

Are you diabetic or pre-diabetic? As of 2007, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cited diabetes as the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Plus as of June 2008 the CDC estimated that approximately 24 million Americans have diabetes, while another 54 million are estimated to be pre-diabetic.

“There are millions of people out there that don’t even realize that they have diabetes,” says Alan Weinstock, an insurance broker “Many of them are over the age of 65 and on Medicare.”

This is significant because the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization ACT (MMA) of 2003 expanded diabetic services covered by Medicare to include diabetes screening for beneficiaries at risk for diabetes or those diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

Know What Medicare Insurance Covers

Medicare covers services to help people with diabetes manage their condition so they can prevent or reduce the severity of diabetes-related complications. Services covered include:

* A fasting blood glucose test AND a post-glucose challenge test OR

* A 2-hour post-glucose challenge test alone

* For pre-diabetes, Medicare covers up to two diabetes screening tests in a 12-month period, not less than six months apart

* Medical services important for people with diabetes to routinely have including foot care, hemoglobin A1c tests and dilated eye exams for diabetic retinopathy

* Preventive benefits such as glaucoma screening and immunizations

* Costs associated with pancreatic islet cell transplant clinical trials

In addition, Medicare covers self-management training and supplies. This includes certain diabetes self-management training services to help Medicare beneficiaries successfully manage the disease as well as therapeutic shoes and inserts (for Medicare beneficiaries with Medicare Part B).

Medicare beneficiaries may also be covered for blood glucose self-testing equipment and supplies such as monitors, insulin pumps, lancet device and lancets, test strips and glucose control solutions.

Physicians merely need to provide a referral for an individual at risk for diabetes and they will receive assistance with no co-insurance, co-payment or deductible.

Are You at Risk for Diabetes?

The first step in dealing with this disease is to understand it. Diabetes can cause serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke and blindness. In fact, it is the leading cause of blindness. Diabetes also makes you susceptible to other illnesses.

That is why it is important, especially if you are a senior on Medicare, to take advantage of diabetes screening tests. You are eligible for coverage under Medicare if you have hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity or a prior identification of an elevated impaired fasting glucose or glucose intolerance. Or if you have at least two other risk factors including overweight, family history, 65 years of age or older and/or a history of gestational diabetes mellitus or delivery of a baby weighing greater than nine pounds.

“The important thing is to stay on top of your health risks, whether that means for diabetes or any other health condition,” suggests Weinstock. “Get regular checkups and ask your doctor questions when you see changes in your health.”

Exercise essential for patients with kidney disease

New findings show that exercise is essential for patients with kidney disease, before they develop end stage renal disease. Kidney disease is associated with early death. Regular exercise can prolong life for patients with kidney dysfunction.

Srinivasan Beddhu, MD (Salt Lake City VA Healthcare System and University of Utah), and colleagues researched the benefits of exercise for prolonging patients’ lives who suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD) by assessing outcomes from a national survey.

Included were 15,368 adults- 5.9% of whom had CKD – in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, a survey of the US population. Participants answered questions about activity levels and then were followed for seven to nine years to find that patients with kidney disease who exercised the most lived longer.

Exercise among patients with kidney disease was so beneficial that even those who were classified as “insufficiently active” had a forty two percent less chance of dying early compared to those who were inactive. Kidney patients who engaged in regular exercise activity were fifty six percent less likely to die during the study.

Diabetes and hypertension –two major contributors to kidney disease – have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Lack of exercise is associated with a majority of chronic illnesses.

According to a 2005 study, published in Kidney International,”The epidemiology of chronic kidney disease The world’s disease profile is changing, and chronic diseases now account for the majority of global morbidity and mortality, rather than infectious diseases. The causes of chronic kidney diseases reflect this change and diabetes, together with hypertension, is now the major cause of end-stage renal failure worldwide, not only within the developed world, but also increasingly within the emerging world.”

In addition, the incidence of diabetes has been predicted to double by year 2030, especially in developing countries. Remaining physically reduces the risks of dying prematurely from all causes. Exercise is now found to be essential for patients with kidney disease, and should be started early. Remaining active can also facilitateweight loss, in turn improving kidney function, according to a review September 2009 from Cleveland Clinic.

The authors say “These data suggest that increased physical activity might have a survival benefit in the CKD population. This is particularly important as mostpatients with stage III CKD die before they develop end stage renal disease. The findings show that exercise is essential for everyone, and can extend the lives ofpatients suffering from kidney disease and kidney dysfunction.

Women Suffer Needlessly from Confusion about Hormones

Many women are so confused and frightened about hormone replacement that they have decided to forget about it. This reaction is not surprising because almost daily there is a new scare headline blaring at them about how hormone replacement causes cancer or even brain shrinkage. Women who were recently told they could regain their lost sexuality by using hormones are now being warned against it. All this confusion is a shame. As a result of it, women are losing out on feeling their best and getting the most from their lives.

When it comes to hormones, names mean very little

To understand hormone replacement requires the patience to look beyond the name. This is because the hormones produced naturally by the body, the hormone drug products made by pharmaceutical companies, and the bioidentical hormones offered by physicians who specialize in anti-aging medicine, are all referred to simply as hormones. When the headlines blare, there is little or no effort made to inform women about what type of hormones are being discussed. To add to this confusion, the names of the hormones most often replaced, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, have become generic terms. These terms are used freely and without regulation to describe the natural hormones produced by the body, hormone drug products, and bioidentical hormones.

To further confuse matters, all hormone replacement therapy, whether it involves hormone drug products or bioidentical hormones is referred to as HRT in most publications. Few physicians or journalists bother to make the distinction as to whether they are talking about hormone drug products or bioidentical hormones. Many may not even be aware of this distinction. The rare journalist willing to distinguish will refer to information regarding bioidentical hormone replacement asbHRT.

There are three kinds of hormones replacement therapies

Hormone drugs should really be referred to as hormone substitution drugs. While they are able to mimic some of the same effects as the body’s natural hormonesthey are unable to confer their full range of benefits. With the exception of conjugated estrogen, hormone drug products are not naturally occurring in nature, and as aresult the body’s immune system mounts an attack on them. This action compromises the immune system’s ability to do the job it was meant to do, and may be one reason cancer is associated with hormone replacement drugs.

The most often prescribed form of the estrogen hormone drug is advertised as a natural product, and technically it is. It is derived from naturally occurring horse urine. But it does not have the same molecular structure as the estrogen naturally made by the human female. There are side effects associated with its use that include endometrial cancer, stoke, and deep vein thrombosis. This product should not be referred to in literature as estrogen, but should be termed conjugated equineestrogen or at least conjugated estrogen.

When faced with a patient exhibiting a broad range of symptoms indicating hormone deficiency, some physicians will prescribe conjugated equine estrogen alone. Taking any kind of estrogen alone, without assuring there are adequate amounts of progesterone and testosterone present, is very dangerous because it creates a state of hormonal imbalance in the body that has been associated with huge increases in risk for breast cancer.

A physician who knows conjugated estrogen must be balanced may also prescribe what is generically called progesterone, but is in reality a progestin. Progestins are not progesterone, no matter what the pharmaceutical brochures say. They are synthetic replicas of progesterone with low compatibility in the human body. Progestins are associated with a horrible range of side effects and are the most dangerous of the hormone replacement drugs.

Because hormone drugs alter reality by creating substances that are unnatural in the body, the liver must detoxify them. Daily doses of toxic products over a period of time can result the liver being compromised to the point where it is unable to perform its duty of keeping the body detoxified. When that happens, hormone drugs and their metabolites recirculate in the body and wreck havoc. The wisdom of the body recognizes unnatural compounds and develops resistance to them so that hormone drugs lose any positive effect in the body after a few years.

The conjugated estrogen plus progestin sub-study of the famous Women’s Health Initiative Study reported highly elevated risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, invasive breast cancer, pulmonary emboli, deep vein thrombosis, and dementia from this combination. It is because of results such as these that it is recommended that women be given hormone drug products for the shortest period of time possible.

In the fully functioning female body, estrogen levels rise in the absence of progesterone for the first two weeks in of the cycle. Then estrogen levels taper off and progesterone kicks in to become the dominant hormone of the second two weeks in the cycle. When conjugated estrogen is prescribed with progestins, the health benefits that result from the natural rhythms of the body are lost. Since the prescribed pill contains both compound, a woman receives a constant dose of progestins throughout the whole month.

The hormone drug product that mimics some of the benefits of testosterone is often referred to as simply testosterone. In reality most hormone drug products that claim to be testosterone are actually methyltestosterone, an unnatural, synthetic creation. Methyltestosterone has been implicated in breast and liver cancers.

Following the one-size-fits all approach of hormone drug therapy, methyltestosterone is included in the same pill as conjugated estrogen. There is no way to adjust the dose to match it to the individual needs of the woman. As a result, most of the side effects of methyltestosterone reflect that the dose is too high or is being inappropriately converted into other hormones in the body. These include acne, high blood pressure, excessive and coarse facial and body hair, deepening voice, polycystic ovary syndrome, weight gain, and unstable blood sugar levels.

Hormone drug products are usually chosen to be prescribed by traditional doctors. Since they get most of their product information from drug companies, they were sold on hormone drugs as the solution for their patients’ complaining of symptoms that reflect declining hormone levels. Following the release of the Women’s Health Initiative, many women refused to continue taking hormone drugs and completely discontinued all hormone therapy. As pharmaceutical companies began to feel the pinch, they made the shift away from producing hormone drugs toward production of bioidentical hormones, although many hormone drugs are still widely available and the first choice of many doctors who have yet to learn about bioidenticals.

Natural hormone therapy is a term frequently used incorrectly to refer to bioidentical hormone therapy. Natural hormone therapy, which should be designated asnHRT, actually uses molecules that have some effects similar to those of the body’s own hormones, but do not have the exact same molecular structure as thehormones made by the body. These are naturally occurring substances, not drugs. Phytoestrogens are hormones naturally found in plants and fall into this category.

Natural hormone replacement products are widely available without a prescription. Some of the most well known are lignans, found in walnuts and other kinds of nuts, and flax seeds and flax oil. There are also isoflavones, such as the controversial genistein and diadzien, both found in soybeans. Red clover is well known for its high phytoestrogen content, as is vitex and black cohosh. There are many phytoestrogen preparations on the market that offer several of these compounds in one capsule.

Women use natural hormone therapy to help see themselves through the worst symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and night sweats. For some women, these products are effective and offer some relief of symptoms. However, because these hormones are very weak compared to the natural hormones produced by the human female, they are not particularly effective for many women. They do offer some protection from breast cancer and osteoporosis, but they are unable to provide the full range of health benefits that would come from being able to restore the body’s own natural hormones.

Bioidentical hormone therapy, which should be distinguished by the letters bHRT, uses hormones manufactured from soy or yam oils. Their molecular structure is identical to hormones made by the human female. Anyone looking at them under a microscope would not be able to tell the difference. The term bioidentical is not a marketing term, but a descriptive term, describing the difference between bioidentical hormones and all others not produced by the body.

Bioidentical hormones have been used for thousands of years. The first record of their use goes back to ancient China, where the aging female nobility routinely ingested dried young women’s urine to counteract problems associated with menopause. The urine of young women contains the metabolic waste products of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. There are many references throughout history to young women’s urine being used to help older women overcome the problems of aging.

Bioidentical estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone have a right to be called by those names because that is what they are. They are identical to the estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone found in the female body. Bioidentical estradiol (the dominant estrogen found in women), progesterone, and testosterone are FDA approved. Estradiol and testosterone are available only by prescription. Progesterone is available over the counter in a physiologic dose, a dose that replicates the levels normally found in the healthy young female.

Bioidentical hormones are commercially mass produced and are available at local pharmacies in tablet, patch, capsule and gel form. Examples include the Vivellepatch, ClimaraEstradermEstracePrometrium, and Androgel. Being mass produced, these products are standardized to specific doses, making them problematic for many women and physicians. To circumvent this problem, compounding pharmacies make bioidentical hormone products to fit the exact dose prescribed by a doctor who specializes in hormone replacement or anti-aging medicine. Compounding pharmacies dispense hormones in gels, creams, capsules, pellets, and as sublinguals.

The best way to get a prescription for bioidentical hormones is to ask your regular doctor to give you one. If he does not know about them or ties to prescribe hormones drugs, try to educate him. Many doctors are receptive to bioidenticals and just need their consciousness raised. If that does not work, find a doctor who specializes in hormone replacement or anti-aging medicine.

Bioidentical hormones have been shown repeatedly not only to be safe, but to be protective of health. When levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are restored to what they were when a woman was at her hormonal prime, bioidentical hormones have been shown to protect against breast cancer, heart attack, stoke, and cognitive impairment. Because bioidenticals are identical in molecular structure to the hormones produced by the body, the body accepts them as such. There is no immune response or development of resistance. When bioidenticals are prescribed in physiologic doses, there are usually no side effects. If side effects develop, it is an indication that dosages need to be adjusted.

Those troubling studies involved the use of hormone drug therapy

The study showing hormone therapy shrinks the brain used data collected as part of the Women’s Health Initiative Study. Data collection was completed before the startling results about the dangers of hormone drugs were made public. The women in the study were taking conjugated equine estrogen, the estrogen drug made from horse urine that is in no way identical to the estrogen made by the female body. Some of the participants were taking conjugated equine estrogen alone, and some were taking a combination drug that contained the equine estrogen and a synthetic progestin drug.

What about the study warning against use of the testosterone patch to boost female libido? Given the success of Viagra for men, it is not surprising that drug companies are falling over each other trying to produce a female equivalent. But the truth is that Intrinsa is just a fancy delivery system for a synthetic methyltestosterone hormone drug.

Women produce just one-tenth the testosterone produced by men, but that little bit is critical to libido and to overall health. Symptoms of declining testosterone levels in women are low sex drive, depression, weakness, fatigue, low energy, and panic attacks. If a woman suspects her libido is low, testosterone may not be the only hormone that needs to be replaced. Estrogen and progesterone levels must be assessed and replaced if they are inadequate. Bringing each of these hormones up to optimal levels with bioidentical hormone replacement gives a real boost to sagging libido while providing other health benefits to the body.

Capsaicin could stop a heart attack in progress, scientists find

The late, famed herbalist Dr. John Christopher was nicknamed “Dr. Cayenne” because he was constantly recommending the healing powers of cayenne, the substance found in chili peppers that produces a sensation of heat. He especially advocated using it for cardiovascular health and even made the claim that doses of cayenne could stop heart attacks in progress (http://www.naturalnews.com/026869_c…). Now science has come up with proof cayenne does have a remarkable ability to help the heart. University of Cincinnati (UC) scientists have found that capsaicin, the main component of cayenne, may literally stop a heart attack in its tracks when applied topically.

New research just published in the journal Circulation concludes that a common, over-the-counter pain salve containing capsaicin rubbed on the skin during a heart attack could serve as a cardiac-protectant — reducing or even preventing damage to the heart. The researchers found an amazing 85 percent reduction in cardiac cell death when capsaicin was used. This is the most powerful cardioprotective effect ever recorded, according to Keith Jones, PhD, a researcher in the UC department of pharmacology and cell biophysics.

Dr. Jones and his research team applied capsaicin to specific skin locations in mice that caused reactions in the nervous system. Specifically, sensory nerves in the skin were triggered to activate what the scientists call cellular “pro-survival” pathways in the heart. The result? The heart muscle was protected from injury.

The researchers also found that a tiny incision made in the abdomen of the lab rodents triggered an 81 percent reduction in the death of heart cells. “Both this and the capsaicin effect are shown to work through similar neurological mechanisms,” Dr. Jones explained. “This is a form of remote cardioprotection, using a skin stimulus that activates cardioprotection long before the blocked coronary artery is opened.”

Dr. Jones is currently working in collaboration with cardiologist Neal Weintraub, MD, director of UC’s cardiovascular diseases division, and other clinicians to test capsaicin’s heart protective abilities in people. “Topical capsaicin has no known serious adverse effects and could be easily applied in an ambulance or emergency room setting well in advance of coronary tissue death,” Dr. Jones said in a media statement. “If proven effective in humans, this therapy has the potential to reduce injury and/or death in the event of a coronary blockage, thereby reducing the extent and consequences of heart attack.”

The researchers think that by activating sensors in the nervous system through skin, a response to preserve and protect the heart is triggered. “This may be similar to the way certain acupuncture treatments work; there may be a neurological basis. In a broad sense, this work may provide a ‘Rosetta stone’ for translating alternative medicine techniques — like acupuncture — to Western medicine. Perhaps we can understand the biological mechanisms of how alternative treatments may be successful for patients,” Dr. Jones stated.

Probiotics prevent asthma

Did you know that probiotics help prevent asthma? It’s not one of those immediately obvious connections, but the more you look into it, the more you’ll see why it works.

Asthma is often the result of systemic inflammation caused by food allergies. Probiotics, it turns out, can help deal with food allergies, calming the inflammation and helping to eliminate many health problems (not just asthma, but also some skin conditions and intestinal disorders as well).

Below, we’ve published a short collection of research quotes about probiotics and asthma, gathered from some of the top health books in the world. Check out what they have to say about the benefits of probiotics:

Probiotics and asthma

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood and one of the most common causes of school absenteeism. Asthma is inflammation of the bronchial tubes. It causes obstruction of the airway, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing. If probiotics are primarily in the intestinal tract, how would probiotics aid the lungs and help to fight asthma? Remember that probiotics have a great influence on the immune system.
– Probiotic Rescue: How You can use Probiotics to Fight Cholesterol, Cancer, Superbugs, Digestive Complaints and More by Allison Tannis

The intestinal microflora plays a role in immune system regulation. Probiotics promote healthy intestinal barriers and immune reactions. Lack of probiotics in infants may prevent proper immune maturation leading to allergies. Leaky gut allows allergens through the intestines and promotes allergies. Probiotics appear to prevent and treat certain atopic diseases (asthma, eczema). Eczema can be effectively treated with probiotics. Asthma may be prevented or treated with probiotics.
– Probiotic Rescue: How You can use Probiotics to Fight Cholesterol, Cancer, Superbugs, Digestive Complaints and More by Allison Tannis

Research shows that both asthma and eczema are linked to abnormal immune responses in newborns. Can probiotics be helpful to children who are at risk of developing allergic diseases such as asthma? Finnish researchers have found that children who were exposed to probiotics around the time of birth were 40% less likely to develop atopic eczema than children in a placebo group; however, exposure to probiotics did not have any protective effect against asthma. Lactobacilluscasei can reduce the rate of eczema in infants, but there has been no word yet on its ability to prevent asthma.
– Probiotic Rescue: How You can use Probiotics to Fight Cholesterol, Cancer, Superbugs, Digestive Complaints and More by Allison Tannis

If steroids/antibiotics have been taken for some time, probiotics friendly flora is needed for actions to boost your own auto-immune system. It is important to follow a starch-free and dairy-free diet. Drinking 6 large glasses of water per day is also critical. What Is Asthma? Asthma is a range of similar lung diseases that can have a variety of causes. It can be life threatening and so has to be taken very seriously. When you have asthma, it’s important to: 1. Take your asthma seriously. 2. Take your asthma medicines as prescribed.

Avoid Food Borne Illness

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), food-borne diseases cause an estimated 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,200 deaths in the United States each year.

There are ways to avoid food borne illness. “Consumers always want to know what they should do to avoid getting sick,” says Sarah Klein, lead author of the report. “Consumers can’t and shouldn’t avoid these foods,” she said.

The first step in avoiding food borne illness is to watch what you buy. Is it important to be sure the food you buy at the grocery store is the freshest available. Check the package expiration or “use by” dates, and when the date expires, throw the food away to be safe. Buying fresh at local farmers markets are one of the safer ways to shop for produce.

Fruits and vegetables can harbor some of the most deadly food-borne pathogens, particularly if they are washed or irrigated with water that is contaminated with animal or human feces. These germs can get into fruits and vegetables during processing or packaging. Therefore, always wash fresh fruits and vegetables even if they come in pre-washed packages or if you plan on peeling them anyhow. This includes washing melons such as watermelon, cantaloupe and honey dew.

In order to avoid food borne illness in foods, be sure to cook foods to the proper temperatures (160 F for ground meat such as hamburger; 165 F for poultry). Use a food thermometer to check for doneness. Under cooking certain meats can cause food borne illness.

There are ways to protect you and your family from some of the hazards of these healthy but vulnerable foods. Don’t buy bruised or damaged produce. Place produce is a separate bag than meats and fish. Keep perishable produce at 40 degrees or below. Be sure to wash cutting boards and counter tops all the time. Do not buy canned goods that are dented, cracked or bulging this can possibly damage the food content.

Other helpful tips to avoid food borne illness include, thaw out food in the refrigerator or microwave, not on the kitchen counter and marinate food in the refrigerator. If you want to use marinade for sauce later, set some aside. Don’t use marinade for sauce once it has been on raw meat or poultry.

“In a relative scale our food supply remains quite safe,” says Craig Hedberg, a professor of environmental and occupational health at the University of MinnesotaSchool of Public Health. Avoiding certain food borne illnesses begins with simple awareness and creating new habits.

Canada Considers HPV Vaccination For Males

With one human papillomavirus vaccine on the market and another on the way, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the FDA have several factors to consider in determining whether to extend the vaccine’s use to boys and men.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is expected to discuss use of the vaccine in young men at its next regular meeting and the FDA could make a decision by the end of the year.

Merck officials said at the ACIP meeting in June that they hope that data on Gardasil, approved for use in women since 2006, will convince both the ACIP and the FDA that the vaccine is effective for the prevention of the malignancies that HPV can cause in men, such as penile and anal cancers, and cancers of the mouth and throat.

CDC data indicate that about 20 million Americans are currently infected with HPV, and another 6.2 million people become newly infected each year. Considering only new cases in men believed to be affiliated with HPV, the American Cancer Society expected almost 10,000 new cases of cancer in 2008.

Cottonseed extract may treat brain cancer like Kennedy’s

An experimental drug derived from cottonseed proved effective in hindering the growth of the type of brain cancer that caused Ted Kennedy’s death. The drug completed Phase II clinical trials under the direction of researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

According to the University’s website, the cottonseed-derived drug, which is named AT-101, demonstrated the ability to retard the abnormal growth of tumor cells in glioblastoma multiforme, a rapidly growing type of brain cancer that is difficult to treat. The clinical trial included 56 patients with glioblastoma multiforme whose tumors had continued to grow despite treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Kennedy underwent all three treatments before his death.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 21,000 Americans are diagnosed each year with brain tumors. Of these about 10,000 are glioblastomas. A glioma is any tumor that forms in the glial brain cells, the most abundant cells in the central nervous system. Glioma is not a specific type of cancer but a category of brain tumor that includes glioblastoma multiforme, astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, and ependymomas.

The clinical trial involved once daily administration of the cottonseed extract drug in pill form for three of four weeks. In many of the patients the cancer stopped progressing. The lead researcher on the study, John Fiveash, MD, an associate professor in the UAB’s Department of Radiation Oncology, reported that some patients had no new growth of their tumors for many months.

The cottonseed-derived drug was well tolerated, and Dr. Fiveash noted that AT-101 may work well when combined with radiation and chemotherapy to enhance the cancer-fighting properties of the conventional treatments. Dr. Fiveash presented his findings at the American Society for Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, in May 2009.

Future research into the safety and efficacy of the cottonseed extract will hopefully lead to an effective treatment option for glioblastomas, which are the most common primary brain tumors. This form of brain cancer is typically diagnosed in people age 55 years and older, and it is common for a glioblastoma to recur after treatment. Generally, the median survival for people who have glioblastoma is 12 to 15 months after diagnosis. Ted Kennedy fought his battle for 15 months.

Bedbug Outbreak Sweeping Across America

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held its first ever bedbug conference in April, in the face of the nation’s largest outbreak of the insects since World War II.

Bedbugs are bloodsucking insects that live in the folds of sheets, mattresses and upholstered furniture such as couches. They remain concealed and sleep during the day, emerging to feed only at night. While the insects do not transmit any diseases, their bites may swell and itch fiercely, much like mosquito bites. Because they feed exclusively on blood, they cannot be eliminated with baited traps like roaches or ants can.

Bedbug extermination is expensive — between $400 and $900 — and of limited effectiveness, in part due to the animals’ ability to hide in tiny crevices. Often, complete extermination requires disposal of any infested furniture. This means that the poor, who cannot afford such measures, are hardest hit by outbreaks.

“I can’t tell you how many people have spent the night in their bathtubs because they are so freaked out by bedbugs,” said bedbug expert Dini Miller of Virginia Tech. “I get these people over the phone that have lost their marbles.”

Many of the insecticides that were formerly most effective at eradicating bedbugs have since been banned by the EPA due to their dangerous effects on human health and the environment. Even these banned chemicals are often infrequent nowadays, however, as their widespread use in other countries has caused bedbugs to evolve resistance to them.

The EPA is currently investigating safe methods of bedbug elimination.

“One of our roles would be to learn of new products or safer products,” said Lois Rossi of the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs. “What we are concerned about is that if people take things into their own hands and start using pesticides on their mattresses that aren’t really registered for that, that’s a problem.”

Natural remedies for acid reflux disease (GERD)

What exactly is “acid reflux disease?” Health consumers are quite familiar with the term (and the symptoms, in many cases), but few have a solid grasp of its underlying causes.

For one thing, the term “disease” doesn’t really apply to this condition. Acid reflux isn’t something you “catch” (like malaria); it’s just a pattern of symptoms with an underlying biochemical cause that can be corrected. And here, in the quotes you’ll find below, we present a wealth of information about what really causes acid reflux (and how to reverse this “disease” by changing your eating habits).

Check out the quotes below and find out what you may have never known about acid reflux…

The causes (and cures) for acid reflux “disease”

In a phenomenon known as acid reflux, food and acid splash up into the esophagus, causing heartburn, chest pains, and belching. A person with severe symptoms may regurgitate stomach acid into the throat and the mouth. Sometimes the acid reflux leads to angina-like chest pains and spasms; the symptoms may be so intense that they are mistaken for a heart attack. Over long periods of time, the constant irritation of the esophagus can lead to inflammation, scarring, ulceration, hemorrhaging, and even esophageal cancer.

The reason I mention these things now is acid reflux disease is a perfect example of how the FDA and the drug companies worked together to create a monopoly and to create a “disease,” and to create billions of dollars in profits. Let me tell you how it works, and I will tell you the cure for “acid reflux disease.” Years ago there was no such thing as acid reflux disease. The reason that today we hear about acid reflux disease is because when the FDA passed the law that “Only a drug can cure, prevent, or treat a disease,” it set up a monopoly for the drug companies in treating diseases.

When people come up to me and say, “I have acid reflux. What can be done?” I then ask, “How many drugs are you on?” They are on one, two, three, four or more. The answer is, “I’ll tell you what. Get off all the drugs, do the Candida cleanse, and then come back in two months and tell me if you still have acid reflux.” If a person were to do that, their symptoms would be gone. They don’t understand that the reason they have acid reflux is because the root cause of it has not been addressed. The root causes of virtually all disease are nonprescription and prescription drugs.

If you want to eliminate acid reflux, start eating more food that has living enzymes. Eat organic, fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Go back to my book. Eat a raw organic apple a day. Eat a fresh salad with lunch and dinner consisting of raw organic vegetables. This will add living enzymes. This is a good start. Now let me give you some additional suggestions to help with acid reflux. 1. Raw apple cider vinegar. Take one tablespoon right before you eat each meal. This should eliminate any acid reflux.

Benefits of Fish in Heart Failure Questioned

Several years ago, the results of a 12-year study found that eating fish was associated with a reduced incidence of heart failure. That was in 2005. Today, results of a new study which also followed the participants for nearly 12 years found that fish consumption does not play a major role in preventing heart failure.

Contradictory or questionable study results are certainly nothing new and provide opportunities for healthcare consumers and experts to reexamine the research and the methods used. Such scrutiny is especially important when the health condition being examined is both life-threatening and pervasive. Heart failure, a condition characterized by an inability of the heart to pump enough blood through the body, affects about 5 million Americans, according to the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. It contributes to about 300,000 deaths per year.

In the current study, the results of which were published in the October issue of the European Journal of Heart Failure, the investigators evaluated data from a group of 5,299 men and women older than 55 years who lived in a suburb or Rotterdam. All were free of heart failure when they entered the study in 1990. During the 11.4 years of follow-up, 669 participants developed heart failure. The diet of each participant had been assessed at baseline, and everyone was asked specifically to indicate the amount, type, and frequency of fish consumed.

The cardiovascular benefits associated with fish are related to the omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that they contain. Both EPA and DHA have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, anti-arrhythmic, and anti-hypertensive properties, as well as an ability to reduce triglyceride levels.

In the latest study, the researchers found no correlation between the amount of fish consumed and heart failure incidence. This lack of effect remained even when comparing high daily fish consumption (more than 20 grams) with no fish intake.

In the earlier study, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 4,738 participants ages 65 year or older were followed for 12 years. When compared with fish consumption of less than one time per month, those who ate fish 1 to 2 times per week had a 20 percent reduced risk of heart failure; 3 to 4 times weekly, a 31 percent reduce risk; and a 37 percent reduce risk was seen when comparing the highest intake with the lowest.

Although the results of the newest study did not show fish to help prevent heart failure, the authors noted that they agree with the current general recommendation of two weekly servings of fish for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Fish is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and a good source of vitamin D, selenium, and protein. They also pointed out that other research has been consistent in showing omega-3 fatty acids to be protective against coronary heart disease.
