There are various types of heart problems. While there will be special heart problem symptoms for every type, there are common signs that are generic to almost all types of heart problems.
- 1. Heart Palpitations
This is one of the most common heart problem symptoms that are prevalent to almost all type of this illness. Skip heartbeat followed by unusually hard pounding is one complaint of people experiencing this symptom. In some cases heartbeat were defined as quick, fast and irregular.
An abnormal heart rhythm (Cardiac Arrhythmia) is a common occurrence for people that are developing a heart disease and have heart palpitation as one of the heart problem symptoms. Cardiac Arrhythmia has many types; most common types are Premature Ventricular Complexes, Premature Atrial Complexes, Supraventricular Tachycardia and Atrial Fibrillation.
- 2. Chest Pains
Chest pains, albeit may be caused of some other diseases, is a significant symptom of heart problem. People experiencing chest pains may have various explanation of what they are going through. Pain can usually last for a few seconds to weeks or even months. Chest pains may mean pressure, soreness, throbbing, squeezing, numbness or discomfort on the chest and neck and may be accompanied by same amount of pain on the limbs, jaw, head or back.
- 3. Breathing Problems
The feeling of something heavy being pressed on the heart that is making the person unable to breathe freely is a general description of this symptom. This is normally felt when lying on their backs; normally, patients with heart problems wakes up gasping for breath. Any intense movement and emotion can make the person with heart problems experience shortness of breath. While this symptom can be caused by a lot of other diseases, prevalence of this is a sure sign of a medical condition that requires attention and evaluation.
- 4. Dizziness
Being frequently dizzy is a sign of a medical problem. While this can indicate heart problems, there are still various other diseases that can be the reason for people to experience episodes of dizziness. As such, it is important to seek medical advice if this symptom is regularly being experienced.
- 5. Losing Consciousness or Fainting Spells
There are different kinds of fainting spells (also known as Syncope): neurologic, metabolic, vasomotor and cardiac. Cardiac syncope is a type of fainting experience that can cause a sudden death.
- 6. Unexplainable Sleepiness, Tiredness or Fatigue
Daytime sleepiness, especially for people who are getting enough sleep, can be a cause of alarm that needs medical attention. The inability to function on a day to day basis because of feeling too tired the entire day can be an indication of a serious medical condition. Somnolence can also be experienced wherein the person craves for too much sleep or suddenly dozes off without the person even noticing it. There are also cases wherein sleep disturbances like insomnia, sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome is also experienced by patients. Especially if this sign is accompanied by all other symptoms indicated above, this signals a medical condition that needs further evaluation.
