Cytonology is the study of cells and their surroundings to check for abnormalities or toxins. The abnormalities or toxins can lead to cancer, disease, or infection. This is done by using a microscope and doing evaluations. Knowledge of laboratory techniques and human biology is very important.
To become a cytotechnologist, one must have a high school diploma or a GED. This is required by the college or institute that one chooses to attend. There are many colleges and institutes that offer a program for Cytotechnologist training and there are schools that focus on cytonology only.
Most colleges and institutes require that one takes a SAT or ACT test. These tests tell what a person’s academic transcripts and standardized test scores are. The tests can usually be done right at the college or institute.
Once approved, the next step would be enrolling in the classes required to receive a Bachelor’s degree. There are some schools available in cytotechnolist training. Most require attending school for one year. At this time a person would be eligible for their Bachelor’s degree and Cytonolgy certificate. One would take the ASCP exam with the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.
Many classes offered and some that are required are:
• Human Anatomy
• Cell and molecule biology
• Laboratory techniques
• Medical ethics
• Cytology techniques
Each college and institute is different so it is very important to find out what the requirements are for the cytonologist training.
Advance programs in cytotechnologists training is available to those whose choose to further their career. One such program is the cytonology master program. This particular program requires that a person be focused and have a lot of patience. There is a lot of focus on laboratory work in this program. This program also prepares the student for leadership positions. It is very important that a student is able to learn and understand theoretical principles and techniques. Below are a few of the items that is needed to be known:
• Cell analysis
• Procedures in clinical laboratory
• Molecular and cellular diagnostics
Once a student has completes and passes the masters program they will be eligible to work as an:
• Laboratory administrator
• Forensic technologist
This is just a few of the possibilities available.
For the advance students a national certificate is provided by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. The title of American Society for Clinical Pathology may be used after ones name.
The cost of schooling varies from school to school as it will for the courses one chooses to take. A person needs to check each out and find the one that is suitable for the needs and means. Many colleges and institutes has financial aid available to their students. Cytotechnologist training will require a lot of time for studying as there is much that one needs to learn.
Once schooling is completed then the doors will be open in such places as hospitals, clinics, health organizations, among other areas for work. The sky is the limit with this training.
