Investigators are currently looking for the person responsible for biting off the left pinky fingertip of a 65 year old man at a health care rally in Thousand Oaks, California Wednesday night. This crime is called mayhem and is punishable by imprisonment for either 2, 4, or 8 years.
This health care rally was relatively small in comparison to the ones across the country. With about 100 supporters for the health insurance changes, it was sponsored by MoveOn.org. There were about 25 in attendance that were against the proposed health care reform. Apparently an argument ensued from the heated emotions and someone’s fingertip was bitten off.
It is unclear what really happened. The man who got his left pinky bitten states he was just walking by and happened to be in someone’s way. Others who saw the fight state that there was an argument between the two and it ended with a fist fight and a lost finger. Currently officials are attempting to track down the man who bit off the other’s fingertip over reform with health care insurance. Authorities do have a good description of the man who bit the finger off.
MoveOn.org, the company who sponsored the rally called the incident “a regrettable act of violence,” states Ilyse Hogue, who is a spokeswoman for the liberal advocacy group. She also goes on to say that they condemn all forms of violence.
The following statement was made by Hogue on behalf of the company, “While we don’t know if either party involved was a MoveOn member, we regret any violence that may have occurred yesterday, and we support the Venture County Sherriff’s investigation into the situation. It is our firm hope that this event does not detract from the tens of thousands who were out peacefully making their voices heard for health care reform and a public option.”
As America moves closer to a final decision on health insurance reform, it is important to make our voices heard, but it should be peacefully. Everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to that opinion. There is a lot of work going on in Washington to make our health care system better. Violence at health care rallies defeats the purpose of the whole reform effort.
