How long does it take to get a PhD

You’re ready to go to college, and you want to attain a doctorate? But how long will it take to get a PhD? The old standards are very outdated. It is very difficult and problematic, for example, to get a “two year” degree in two years. The standards that were put in place back in the ’60s. So how long does it take?

Well, a Bachelor’s would take you. on average, about 6 years. Once you complete that, if you have the financial resources, you can get a Master’s in another 2, or shoot towards the big one, the Ph.D.. One of the big differences between the two is that a Master’s is more career oriented, that is that if a person wants to learn a new trade or advance in their career, a Master’s may be the key for them and it would certainly set them apart from people with a Bachelor’s.

On the other hand, a Ph.D. is more research oriented. Most people who get Ph.D.’s end up in teaching, science or other fields relating to studying, largely because of the massive amount of research going on. Some schools don’t even let you make a mistake. One grade below a “B”, and you’re ineligible to continue towards a Ph.D..

With all that, how long does it take to get a PhD? The minimum is 5 to 7 years after you complete your Bachelor’s program, and many can take 9 years or longer. The reason this is the case is because often times a Doctoral candidate must spend two years training under someone in their vocation. Also, a Ph. D. will require an original contribution to the field of study. Anyone who gets a doctorate in Psychology, for example, must contribute original materials to Psychology in general. This is why most Ph.D. candidates are what is known as “ABD”, which means “All But Dissertation”. Because a dissertation may take years to complete and must be hundreds of pages long, some colleges even award “Candidate of Philosophy” or “Master of Philosophy” degrees for this particular situation.

Even though a Ph.D. degree does not require a Master’s Degree en route to getting the doctorate, it is possible that a doctoral candidate will be given a Master’s Degree based on coursework done and studies completed upon the writing of a thesis. Many people believe you do in fact have to get the Master’s before pursuing the Doctorate. Although untrue, a Master’s Degree usually helps by showing the college that you are serious about post-graduate work.

The other thing it requires is cash, a lot of cash and effort. The amount of work you put in for any post-graduate level degree is exhausting. You will be working hard and turning in work that will test your ability to critically think on a much greater level than you ever have before. Not to mention since you will be missing out on years of work and income, that the cost may be greater than just books, food and tuition during that time, but if you have a passion for teaching or just enjoy the challenge, a Doctorate program is a great way to put all doubters to rest about your ability to think for yourself.
